A Romanian Car Scheme Landed Hillary Clinton's Brother in an FBI Case File

Judicial Watch spent years fighting the FBI in court just to get these documents released.

The watchdog group finally forced out 77 pages of heavily redacted records tied to a 1996 criminal investigation into Anthony "Tony" Rodham.

The FBI's Miami Field Office opened the case under number 196D-MM-79121, a designation the bureau reserves specifically for wire fraud.

Investigators were looking at East European Imports, Inc., a Coral Gables company that claimed exclusive U.S. rights to sell Romanian-made ARO four-wheel-drive vehicles.

Salesmen fanned out across the country promising dealers exclusive franchise rights to sell the ARO 24 and ARO 10 models.

Dealers were told to wire deposits of $30,000 or more, some reportedly closer to $70,000, just to reserve territory for cars that may never have existed.

Tony Rodham personally traveled to Romania and lobbied government officials there to legitimize the deal.

The records show Rodham had already been warned that his partners fed Romanian officials phony, inflated numbers to make the deal look real.

He kept promoting the company anyway.

EEI never imported a single vehicle.

The FBI's Own Words Show Why Agents Got Nervous About the Clinton Name

One passage in the file says the investigation "assumed sensitive political aspects" – specifically because Rodham was Hillary Clinton's brother.

The bureau didn't bury that fact in a footnote – agents typed his name in capital letters, right next to hers, as if the family name itself was the reason for extra caution.

Ask yourself how fast that file would have surfaced if the last name attached to it belonged to a Trump.

That single sentence flips this story from a failed car import scheme into a warning about who gets protected in Washington.

The investigation was unfolding in the middle of Bill Clinton's 1996 reelection campaign.

Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton did not hold back on what that timing means.

Fitton said the release confirms federal agents were investigating Hillary Clinton's own brother and argued it raises new questions about what the government is still hiding on the wider Clinton family.

Rodham died in 2019, and Judicial Watch filed its FOIA request three days later.

The FBI stalled for six years before Judicial Watch was forced to sue.

The bureau has already admitted it is sitting on more than 13,000 additional pages tied to Rodham, plus audio and video files nobody outside the bureau has seen.

Tony Rodham spent decades cashing in on the Clinton name, describing himself as a facilitator while chasing deals from Chinese investor conferences to a Haiti gold mine advisory board.

He even pursued a $22 million Haiti housing contract while Bill Clinton sat on the commission overseeing the country's earthquake recovery – a deal that collapsed under its own weight.

None of that happened in a vacuum.

Separate State Department records already showed Huma Abedin fast-tracking access for Clinton Foundation megadonors while Rodham himself asked Abedin for personal favors, including help with a green card renewal.

Every time investigators get close to the Clinton family's business dealings, the same pattern shows up – redactions, delays, and files that take decades to surface.

The redactions alone tell you the agency was protecting the Clinton name, not running an investigation.

That wasn't an accident, and it wasn't a one-time favor.

Hillary Clinton knows exactly what's sitting in that file, and Judicial Watch says it isn't stopping until the rest of it sees daylight.
