Ilhan Omar went silent when Fox News reporters cornered her last week about her ties to the biggest fraud scandal in American history.
Now the president just named her by name – at a White House cabinet meeting – with the man running the federal fraud task force sitting at the same table.
What happens next isn't a tweet. It's a federal investigation with a $19 billion price tag and a task force that's already making arrests.
Trump Names Omar at JD Vance Fraud Task Force Meeting
May 27. White House cabinet room. Vance to Trump's left. The subject on the table: the administration's fraud crackdown in Minnesota.
Trump didn't hedge.
"The Somalians, what they've done to Minnesota, the Somalians, crooked as hell," he said. "Ilhan Omar, crooked as hell. They're all crooks. And we got them. We got them. Now we're putting the clamps on."
That was the president of the United States, at the cabinet table, naming a sitting congresswoman in the same breath as a billion-dollar fraud investigation – with the man running that investigation seated beside him.
Trump also confirmed the administration had made additional fraud arrests in Minnesota the week prior.
Feeding Our Future and the $9 Billion Minnesota Fraud Scheme
This isn't Trump making something up. The fraud is real, it is staggering, and it has been building for years under Tim Walz – who watched it happen and then announced he wouldn't seek reelection.
The Feeding Our Future scandal alone resulted in charges against more than 90 people, at least 60 of whom have been convicted. The DOJ says defendants pocketed roughly $250 million intended to feed children during the pandemic – the largest pandemic relief fraud case in American history. Federal prosecutors say approximately 89% of those charged are Somali Americans.
That was just the beginning.
Federal investigators expanded the probe to 14 separate Minnesota programs – Medicaid housing services, autism therapy for children, elderly care. The U.S. Attorney's office now estimates more than half of the roughly $18 billion in federal funds flowing through those programs since 2018 may have been stolen. Heritage Foundation analysis puts total losses potentially north of $9 billion.
Vance put it plainly at the task force launch: "You had autistic kids in Minneapolis who weren't getting benefits they needed because Somali fraudsters were literally stealing out of their pocket."
The MEALS Act Paper Trail Connecting Ilhan Omar to the Fraud
Omar has publicly denied any knowledge of the Feeding Our Future scheme.
"Any claim that I had knowledge of this scheme is flat-out false," she told Fox News.
But Republicans aren't letting it go. The MEALS Act – legislation Omar championed and publicly took credit for – created the federal waiver authority that prosecutors say opened the door to the entire Feeding Our Future scheme. In her own press release, Omar described the act as legislation that "directly authorized these school meal waivers."
The Minnesota House Fraud Prevention Committee invited her to testify. She didn't show up. Republicans sought a subpoena. Democrats on the committee blocked it.
Then came the financial disclosure issue. Trump has publicly suggested the DOJ is investigating Omar after her husband's companies showed a dramatic jump in value between her 2023 and 2024 disclosures. Omar filed an amended disclosure in April.
She's not being accused of running the scheme. But a congresswoman whose signature legislation enabled the fraud, who declined to testify, whose finances drew presidential scrutiny – that's a woman who looks like she's running out of room.

Minnesota Medicaid Fraud Crackdown Is Already Making Arrests
Trump has attacked Omar before. Democrats have absorbed those moments and moved on.
This was different.
This happened inside a formal cabinet meeting. The context was a specific active federal investigation. The anti-fraud task force – led by Vance, backed by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, equipped with subpoena authority and Geographic Targeting Orders on international financial transactions – was the subject on the table when Trump named her.
Treasury has issued notices of investigation to multiple money services businesses in Minnesota. Bessent implemented enhanced reporting requirements on international wire transfers. Vance's task force has separately flagged nearly $6.3 billion in government contracts going to potentially fraudulent businesses nationwide. Walz – who spent years dismissing fraud concerns as politics and retaliating against whistleblowers – is already headed for the exit.
Omar is not.
Trump said it directly: we got them. Now we're putting the clamps on.
The question isn't whether the investigation reaches her. The question is what they find when it does.
