Winter Storm Fern Is Something Completely Different From What Just Hit Russians in Kamchatka

Americans think 6 inches of snow is cause for panic and school closures.

Russians in the Far East just had a real snow dump.

And some Kamchatkans went absolutely max in a winter storm that was something else entirely.

Historic Snowstorm Buries Kamchatka Peninsula Under Record Snow

Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula just experienced the worst snowstorm in over 50 years.

Starting January 12, powerful cyclones from the Sea of Okhotsk slammed the region with relentless snowfall for days.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the capital of Kamchatka Krai, saw snow depths hit 170 centimeters on average across the city.

Some areas got buried under 5 meters of snow — that's over 16 feet.

The city received 370 millimeters of snow in December alone, more than three times the monthly average.

From January 1 to 16, another 163 millimeters fell.

Officials from the Kamchatka Krai hydro-meteorological department said the last time they saw anything like this was the early 1970s.

Mayor Yevgeny Belyayev declared a citywide state of emergency on January 15 after two elderly men were killed when snow fell from rooftops.

Schools shut down, public transit stopped running, and flights were grounded as the storm raged.

But here's the difference between Russians and Americans facing severe winter weather.

Russians Turned Snowpocalypse Into a Playground

Americans would see 7-foot snowdrifts and immediately declare a state of emergency, cancel everything for a week, and cower indoors.

Russians saw the exact same conditions and decided to have some fun.

Kids in Kamchatka were sledding off the roofs of high-rise apartment buildings.

One guy jumped out of his second-story window straight into a seven-foot snow drift below just because he could.

People were tunneling through snowbanks to reach their neighbors.

Some residents who couldn't get out their front doors just climbed out second-story windows and dropped into the snow.

Social media exploded with videos of Russians treating the historic blizzard like their own personal winter sports resort.

The Moscow Times showed rescue workers literally tunneling through massive snowbanks to reach elderly residents trapped in their homes.

Meanwhile, in America, schools close if there's a chance of flurries.

American Snow Days Look Pathetic By Comparison

The contrast couldn't be more stark.

The ice and snow of winter storm Fern is certainly wreaking havoc on much of the United States to be sure.

But things regularly grind to halt here when there’s little more than a dusting of snow.

In fact, school districts have entire "Snow Day Calculator" websites where parents can check if 2 inches of snow will shut down the schools.

These calculators use "advanced AI" and "98% accuracy rates" to predict whether kids can handle seeing a little white stuff on the ground.

Districts monitor weather forecasts, assess road conditions, and consult meteorologists like they're planning a Mars landing.

When Minneapolis got 8 inches of snow in January 2024, it made headlines and schools shut down.

Kamchatka residents probably wouldn't even notice 8 inches.

The weather service in Oymyakon, Yakutsk — the coldest permanently inhabited place on Earth — said temperatures below minus 56°C are when schoolchildren are "allowed" not to go to classes.

That's negative 69 degrees Fahrenheit.

Adults still work in any weather there.

They just dress warm.
