Virginia Democrats Hit Voters With Tax Wave Just Weeks After Spanberger Promised Affordability

Feb 1, 2026

Democrats keep promising to make life more affordable.

Then they get elected and instantly raise taxes.

And Virginia Democrats just unleashed a tax tsunami on voters that proves they never meant a word they said.

Spanberger's Affordability Promise Lasted Exactly Three Weeks

Abigail Spanberger won Virginia's governor race running on one issue — making the Commonwealth more affordable for working families.

That promise survived until January 17, 2026 when she was sworn in as governor.

Less than a month later, Virginia Democrats introduced more than 50 new tax proposals that would hit everything from dog walking to gym memberships to Amazon deliveries.

Here's the jaw-dropping list of taxes Spanberger's fellow Democrats are pushing through the legislature right now.

New local sales tax in all Virginia counties and cities, personal property tax on electric leaf blowers and landscaping equipment, large employer tax, gun and ammunition tax, new income tax brackets, delivery tax hitting Amazon and Uber Eats orders in Northern Virginia.

Investment income tax, event tax, storage facility tax, gym membership tax, dog walking tax, dog grooming tax, counseling tax, digital personal property tax, new car taxes and highway use fees, increase in hotel tax in Arlington.

Statewide speed cameras for more driver fines, vehicle repair tax, home repair tax, dry cleaning tax, fantasy sports tax, and rideshare taxes.

WJLA tried reaching Spanberger's office for two days straight and never got a response.

That tells you everything you need to know — Democrats have no defense for this bait and switch.

Voters Getting Crushed While Democrats Push Radical Agenda

The tax assault isn't even the worst part.

Virginians are already seeing their electricity bills nearly triple under new Democrat-approved energy rates.

One resident told reporters she's now paying $600 per month for electricity — more than her car payment.

That's what happens when Spanberger rejoined the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative that Governor Glenn Youngkin wisely pulled Virginia out of.

It's a backdoor carbon tax that drives up power bills by design.

Meanwhile, Democrats are racing to jam through four major constitutional amendments before voters can respond in the midterms.

They want to enshrine abortion access, same-sex marriage, automatically restore voting rights to felons, and allow mid-decade redistricting to rig congressional maps.

The Virginia Mercury called this "not a normal opening act for a legislative session" because Spanberger is "setting the stage for an aggressive year one."

No kidding.

Most politicians wait until after the midterms to betray voters this badly.

Republicans Have Their 2026 Playbook Handed To Them

Here's the beautiful thing about Spanberger's train wreck.

She's doing this a full year before the 2026 midterms.

That means Republican candidates across the country have 10 months to show voters exactly what happens when Democrats promise affordability and deliver tax increases.

Grover Norquist from Americans for Tax Reform nailed it when he said Virginia is becoming "a tax-hiking outlier in a region full of states that are phasing out their income taxes."

West Virginia is eliminating its state income tax.

North Carolina just dropped its flat income tax from 4.25% to 3.99%.

Georgia Republicans are pushing to eliminate property taxes on homes.

And Virginia Democrats are taxing dog groomers and gym memberships.

See the pattern?

This isn't just Virginia either.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani ran on affordability and now he's pointing to a $12 billion budget deficit while calling for massive tax increases on the wealthy.

Democrats campaign on lower costs, then govern with tax hikes and blame games.

Virginia Proves Democrats Never Change

Spanberger won by claiming she'd focus on issues that impact voters in their wallets.

But Democrats now control the governorship, House of Delegates, and state Senate.

They wasted exactly zero time pursuing their leftist agenda.

The tax proposals aren't accidents or surprises.

This is what Democrats always do — they just usually wait until after the midterms to do it.

Spanberger got so confident after her November victory she couldn't even wait a year before betraying the voters who elected her.

Political scientist Stephen Farnsworth told the Virginia Mercury that Spanberger is "setting the stage for an aggressive year one."

He should've said suicidal.

Because Republican strategists who can't turn Virginia into a disaster story for every Democrat running in 2026 don't deserve their jobs.

Every Republican candidate needs one message next year — "I'm not Abigail Spanberger."

That might be enough to save the House and Senate majorities.
