Trump’s cabinet just delivered the biggest blow to the Green New Deal that will send energy prices plummeting

President Donald Trump promised to slash burdensome regulations and unleash American energy dominance.

Climate alarmists and Green New Deal advocates hoped it was just campaign rhetoric.

And Trump’s cabinet just delivered the biggest blow to the Green New Deal that will send energy prices plummeting.

Secretary of Energy Chris Wright announced the first phase of what he’s calling “the largest deregulatory effort in history” at the Department of Energy on Monday, proposing to eliminate or modify a staggering 47 regulations.

The move is expected to save American consumers an estimated $11 billion and cut more than 125,000 words of bureaucratic red tape from the Code of Federal Regulations.

“While it would normally take years for the Department of Energy to remove just a handful of regulations, the Trump Administration assembled a team working around the clock to reduce costs and deliver results for the American people in just over 110 days,” Wright said in a statement released on the Energy Department’s website.

The announcement comes just days after Wright testified before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, where he outlined his vision for the Department.

During that testimony, Wright was blunt about his priorities: “Energy is the backbone of civilization. It is the essential catalyst of human progress— enabling everything that we do, from the lights in our home, the process heat in our factories and the innovation in our national laboratories.”

Wright didn’t mince words about who these regulations were really designed to benefit – and it wasn’t everyday Americans.

“Thanks to President Trump’s leadership, we are bringing back common sense — slashing regulations meant to appease Green New Deal fantasies, restrict consumer choice and increase costs for the American people,” he declared.

Slashing $15 Billion in “Green New Scam” Spending

The FY2026 Budget from the Energy Department, presented just last week, reflects this commitment by eliminating over $15 billion in what Wright called “Green New Scam funding that supports more expensive, less reliable energy sources.”

Wright has made it clear that the Department of Energy under the Trump administration will have a dramatically different focus than the previous administration.

The deregulatory package tackles a wide range of burdensome rules that have been driving up costs for American families.

Among the 47 actions are proposals to eliminate or modify dozens of consumer appliance standards that have frustrated homeowners across the country.

Remember those water-saving shower heads that barely got you wet? They’re on the chopping block, with the DOE “rescinding the definition of shower head to unleash better shower pressure.”

The low-flow faucet requirements that make washing dishes take twice as long? Those water use standards for faucets are being rescinded too.

And don’t forget about those dishwashers that run for three hours but still leave food stuck to your plates – the DOE is rescinding “amended water use standards for residential dishwashers.”

The energy efficiency standards for microwaves, conventional cooking tops, and conventional ovens are all being eliminated as well.

“We are actively working to strengthen America’s role as the world’s leader in oil and natural gas production and lower costs for all Americans,” Wright told lawmakers last week. In the same testimony, he promised to “rightsiz[e] DOE’s regulatory approach to home efficiency standards” to ensure “that the American people can choose which appliances work best for their homes and budgets.”

This regulatory assault on America’s kitchens and bathrooms was part of the Biden Administration’s climate agenda, which sought to control how Americans could use energy in their own homes.

The DOE is also streamlining natural gas export procedures and making it easier to build energy infrastructure across international boundaries – moves that will strengthen America’s position as an energy superpower.

In fact, Wright proudly reported to Congress that the Department had “officially ended the previous administration’s reckless pause on LNG export permits and returned DOE to regular order for reviewing and approving new permits.”

Since January, Wright testified that the Department “has approved applications for projects that will export more than 9.5 billion cubic feet per day of LNG, adding nearly as much incremental capacity as the world’s leading LNG exporting countries.”

These regulatory changes fulfill President Trump’s Executive Order, “Zero-Based Regulation to Unleash American Energy,” which he signed shortly after taking office in January.

The Left is already in full meltdown mode over the announcement, with climate activists calling it “catastrophic” and “a gift to polluters.”

But for regular Americans tired of paying higher prices for less effective appliances, this comes as welcome relief.

The Energy Department’s announcement represents only the first phase of President Trump’s deregulatory agenda, with more actions expected across other departments in the coming months.

What’s even more impressive is the speed with which these changes are happening. As Secretary Wright noted, this scale of deregulation would typically take years, but the Trump administration accomplished it in just over 110 days.

Rebuilding American Energy Security from the Ground Up

Secretary Wright has also made it clear that the Department is planning major shifts in other priorities as well. In his congressional testimony, he revealed plans to replenish the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which he said was subjected to a “politically motivated depletion of 180 million barrels” by the previous administration that “significantly degraded SPR infrastructure, brought storage levels to historic lows, and weakened America’s ability to respond to new geopolitical oil market shocks.”

Wright also told lawmakers the Department will accelerate “the rapid deployment and export of next-generation nuclear technology, including small modular reactors” and prioritize “research that supports true technological breakthroughs, such as nuclear fusion, high-performance computing, quantum computing, and AI.”

For decades, Washington bureaucrats have been micromanaging Americans’ lives down to the water pressure in their showers and the way their dishwashers clean plates.

The Biden-Harris administration doubled down on this regulatory overreach, using climate change as justification for restricting consumer choice and driving up costs.

But with this announcement, the Trump administration is sending a clear message: the era of government control over Americans’ appliances and energy choices is coming to an end.

“My priorities for the Department are clear — to unleash a golden era of American energy dominance, strengthen our national security, and lead the world in innovation,” Wright told Congress. “A reliable and abundant energy supply is the foundation of a strong and prosperous nation — it drives our economy, safeguards our freedoms and fuels breakthroughs that improve our lives.”

“When America leads in energy,” Wright declared, “we lead in prosperity, security and human flourishing.”
