Trump Got Blindsided By Surprise Reaction to Explosive Iran Decision

Jan 16, 2026

President Trump built his movement on putting America first.

Now, the base has a message he can't ignore.

And Trump got blindsided by a surprise reaction to the explosive Iran decision.

Charlie Kirk Warned Trump Against Iran War In Final White House Meeting

Before his assassination last September, Charlie Kirk had become one of Trump's most trusted advisors on avoiding foreign wars.

Tucker Carlson revealed on the Megyn Kelly Show that Kirk went to the Oval Office personally to warn Trump about Iran.

"He went to the Oval Office and said, 'Sir, I totally understand and think Iran's really bad. But a war with Iran is something that could really hurt our country,'" Carlson recounted.

Kirk faced intense pressure from donors aligned with Turning Point USA who wanted a more aggressive stance against Iran.

But Kirk refused to back down because "he was for doing the right and wise and difficult thing," according to Carlson.

During the June crisis when Israel and Iran fought a brief 12-day war, Kirk publicly warned that "Trump voters, especially young people, supported President Trump because he was the first president in my lifetime to not start a new war."

Kirk wrote that "there is historically little support for America to be actively engaged in yet another offensive war in the Middle East."

The Turning Point founder cautioned that Iran's "size, history, and resilience made open war a dangerous prospect" given that "they were a great power for a thousand years."

When Trump ultimately struck three Iranian nuclear sites in Operation Midnight Hammer, Kirk publicly supported the limited surgical strike as opposed to a broader war.

Kirk's assassination on September 10th silenced one of Trump's most influential voices urging restraint on foreign military intervention.

Vice President JD Vance said at Kirk's memorial service that "if it weren't for Charlie Kirk, I would not be the Vice President of the United States."

More than 32,000 students signed up for Turning Point USA chapters in the days following Kirk's death, showing the massive reach of his America First message to young conservatives.

Poll Shows 70% Of Americans Oppose Trump Iran Military Strikes

A new Quinnipiac University poll reveals something remarkable happening across party lines.

Americans overwhelmingly reject military intervention in Iran, with 70% opposing U.S. involvement even if the regime kills protesters.

The opposition spans the political spectrum — 79% of Democrats, 80% of Independents, and 53% of Republicans said no to military action.

Trump has ramped up threats against Tehran following Iranian security forces killing nearly 2,000 protesters during massive demonstrations that erupted in late December over the country's collapsing economy, with some estimates putting the death toll over 3,000.

Trump posted on social media that "HELP IS ON ITS WAY" for Iranian protesters and warned regime officials "they will pay a big price."

The White House confirmed Monday that Trump is weighing bombing Iran in response to the violent crackdown.

But Trump's own voters are warning him this isn't what they signed up for when they elected him.

Tucker Carlson And Rand Paul Lead America First Opposition To Iran Action

Without Kirk's steady influence, the divide between Trump and his base grew more visible.

Trump called Tucker Carlson "kooky" for opposing potential strikes during the June crisis.

Marjorie Taylor Greene jumped to Carlson's defense, arguing that "foreign wars/intervention/regime change put America last, kill innocent people, are making us broke, and will ultimately lead to our destruction."

Senator Rand Paul has been even more direct about the current situation.

Paul warned that bombing Iran "is not the answer" and said supporting regime change isn't "the job of the American government."

The Kentucky Senator argued Trump's threats could backfire by rallying Iranians behind the Ayatollah rather than undermining the regime.

The shift in Republican opinion is dramatic — 53% now oppose Iran intervention compared to more mixed views during the June strikes just seven months ago.

Quinnipiac Poll: 70% Say Trump Needs Congressional Approval For Iran Strikes

Seven in ten Americans believe a president should receive congressional approval before ordering military strikes against another country.

That includes 95% of Democrats and 78% of Independents.

Republicans remain split, with 54% saying congressional approval isn't needed and 35% saying it is required.

Trump already faces criticism from his own movement for bypassing Congress when he bombed Iranian nuclear sites last June and when he sent Delta Force operators to capture Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro earlier this month.

The Venezuela operation split public opinion almost perfectly down the middle, with 47% supporting and 45% opposing Trump's decision.

Multiple surveys show Americans remain deeply skeptical of foreign military interventions regardless of short-term approval bumps.

Trump's approval rating ticked up slightly after the Maduro capture, rising from 39% in December to 42% in early January according to Reuters/Ipsos polling, but the gains proved temporary.

Trump Faces America First Base Revolt Over Iran Military Intervention

Trump ran for President in 2016 and 2024 promising to end endless wars and put America first.

His base elected him specifically because he wasn't another warmonger like the Bush-Cheney neoconservatives who destroyed Iraq.

Charlie Kirk understood this better than anyone in Trump's inner circle.

Kirk spent his final months warning Trump that abandoning the America First message on foreign wars would betray the young conservatives who powered his movement.

Iranian protesters desperately need help against a brutal regime that's murdered thousands of its own citizens.

But Trump's own voters are telling him loud and clear that help shouldn't come in the form of American bombs and boots on the ground.

The question is whether Trump remembers the wisdom Charlie Kirk tried to impart — that America First means exactly that, not fighting other countries' battles for them.
