Donald Trump spent months warning America about the dangers of Zohran Mamdani taking control of New York City.
The President called him a communist, threatened to cut federal funding, and even suggested he'd deport the Uganda-born socialist.
And Trump caught everyone by surprise when he invited Mamdani to the Oval Office for a face-to-face meeting.
Trump Extends Hand to Man He Called America's Enemy
President Trump announced Wednesday night that he will meet with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House on Friday.¹
The meeting comes after Mamdani's team reached out requesting a sit-down with the President.
"Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran 'Kwame' Mamdani, has asked for a meeting," Trump wrote on Truth Social.¹ "We have agreed that this meeting will take place at the Oval Office on Friday, November 21st."
Trump's decision to host Mamdani marks a stunning reversal after months of scorched-earth attacks on the 34-year-old democratic socialist.
During the mayoral campaign, Trump warned New Yorkers that electing Mamdani would doom their city.
"If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home," Trump posted just two days before Election Day.²
The President didn't stop at funding threats.

Trump endorsed former Democrat Governor Andrew Cuomo at the last minute, threw his support behind anyone who could stop Mamdani, and repeatedly labeled the democratic socialist as a communist on national television.
He even threatened to deport Mamdani, who became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018 after being born in Uganda.
Socialist Mayor Ran on Platform to Transform NYC Into European-Style Welfare State
Mamdani didn't win by accident or by hiding his radical agenda.
The Democratic Socialists of America member ran openly on a platform that would make Bernie Sanders blush.
His campaign promises included freezing rents for one million New Yorkers, making all city buses completely free, opening government-run grocery stores in every borough, and raising the minimum wage to $30 per hour by 2030.³
Mamdani wants to fund these programs by hitting corporations and anyone making over $1 million with massive tax increases.⁴
He's a card-carrying member of the Democratic Socialists of America who quotes Eugene Debs in his victory speeches and calls for "collective ownership of key economic drivers."
During his campaign, Mamdani backed the "Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions" movement against Israel and introduced legislation to ban New York nonprofits from supporting Israeli settlements.⁵
He participated in a five-day hunger strike outside Washington, D.C. demanding Biden stop supporting Israel's response to the October 7 Hamas attacks.
After refusing to denounce the phrase "globalize the intifada" early in his campaign, Mamdani only backtracked when Jewish voters pushed back.⁶
The 34-year-old state assemblyman's biggest legislative achievement before becoming mayor-elect? Making a handful of city buses free for one year.⁶
That's the resume Trump is now legitimizing with an Oval Office meeting.
Conservative Base Left Stunned by Trump's About-Face
Trump's sudden shift toward Mamdani has conservatives asking what happened to the President who promised to crush socialism in America.
Just weeks ago, Trump was comparing Mamdani to communist dictators and warning that New York City had "ZERO chance of success, or even survival" under socialist leadership.²
Now Trump is telling reporters "we'll work something out" and promising to help make New York successful.⁷
The meeting gives Mamdani exactly what he needs most — legitimacy.
By hosting the socialist mayor-elect at the White House, Trump hands Mamdani a powerful talking point that he can govern effectively even with a hostile federal government.
It undermines every Republican who spent the past six months warning New York voters about the dangers of democratic socialism.
Mamdani knows this, which is why his team jumped at the chance to request the meeting.
"As is customary for an incoming mayoral administration, the Mayor-elect plans to meet with the President in Washington to discuss public safety, economic security and the affordability agenda that over one million New Yorkers voted for just two weeks ago," Mamdani's spokesperson said.¹
That "affordability agenda" includes rent freezes, government-run grocery stores, and a $30 minimum wage that would destroy every small business still operating in New York City.

Trump Shifts Messaging After Democrats Sweep Key Elections
The timing of Trump's reversal tells you everything you need to know.
Democrats crushed Republicans in key elections on November 4, with Mamdani winning the NYC mayoral race alongside Democrat gubernatorial victories in Virginia and New Jersey.⁸
Republicans got destroyed while Trump wasn't on the ballot, and the President knows it.
Trump's initial reaction was to blame the losses on the government shutdown and his absence from the ballot.⁸
But within days, the President started talking about "affordability" — the exact issue Mamdani rode to victory.
By Friday of last week, Trump was posting on Truth Social that the GOP is the "Party of Affordability" despite spending months ignoring cost-of-living concerns.⁹
Now Trump is meeting with the socialist who beat his handpicked candidate by running on those exact issues.
Vice President JD Vance admitted Republicans "have to do better at turning out voters" and must "focus on the home front" with emphasis on affordability.⁸
Translation: Trump realized too late that voters care more about grocery prices than his warnings about communism.
The meeting with Mamdani represents Trump trying to co-opt the socialist's winning message rather than continuing to attack it.
That's retreat mode, and conservatives see it.
Trump spent the 2024 campaign warning America that Democrats wanted to turn the country into Venezuela.
Now he's rolling out the red carpet for a mayor-elect who literally quotes Eugene Debs and wants government-run grocery stores.
The base that elected Trump to fight socialism is watching their President legitimize it instead.
