The New York Giants have mastered the art of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
Their latest collapse officially ended any hope of salvaging this season.
And Trump called one Giants coaching decision "crazy" and it just cost them everything.
Giants interim coach makes baffling call that left Trump speechless
Sunday's 34-27 overtime loss to the Detroit Lions perfectly captured everything wrong with the New York Giants in 2025.
Leading 27-24 with less than three minutes remaining, the Giants drove deep into Lions territory and faced fourth-and-goal from the six-yard line.
Any competent coach would have kicked the field goal to take a six-point lead and force Detroit to score a touchdown to win.
Instead, interim head coach Mike Kafka decided to roll the dice on a touchdown attempt.
Quarterback Jameis Winston's pass to tight end Theo Johnson fell incomplete, turning the ball over on downs and handing Detroit golden field position.
The Lions marched down the field and kicked a 59-yard field goal to tie the game and send it to overtime, where running back Jahmyr Gibbs ran 69 yards for the game-winning touchdown on the first play.
President Donald Trump watched the ending unfold and couldn't believe what he witnessed.
"Why did the New York Football Giants (NFL) not kick that Field Goal???" Trump wrote on Truth Social. "Who would have done such a thing? It was CRAZY!"
"I got to watch the end of the game and thought, when they went for the touchdown instead of the 3, 'That's Weird!!!'" Trump added.
Even Giants receiver Malik Nabers, who has been sidelined since September with a torn ACL, couldn't contain his frustration.
"Sometimes I think they (be) making us lose on purpose!" Nabers posted on X before deleting the message. "Cause it's no way, bro you throw the ball instead of runnin it to make em burn 2 timeouts?? Then you (don't) kick the field goal??? Then they have to go down and score!!! Football common sense!!!! Am I missing something?"
Kafka doubles down on decision that eliminated Giants from playoffs
Kafka attempted to defend his disastrous decision in the postgame press conference.
"We did want to be aggressive," Kafka said. "Just thought it was a good time to take points in that situation and go up two scores. Had a good flow, wanted to go up two scores."
That explanation makes no sense since kicking the field goal would have actually given them points, while failing on fourth down gave them nothing.
The loss dropped the Giants to 2-10 and officially eliminated them from playoff contention.
It marked the fifth time this season New York has blown a double-digit lead, tying an NFL record for futility.
The Giants have now lost six straight games and 12 consecutive road contests dating back to last season.
Winston, who threw for 222 yards and three touchdowns in the loss, admitted the failure haunted him.
"So many 'ifs, ands and buts,'" Winston said. "If my pass to the right to Theo Johnson is four inches to the left, that's a touchdown and we finish the game."
"I loved Coach Kafka's message before the game: 'Leave no doubt.' Today, we left some doubt out there," Winston added. "We were on the 3-yard line with a chance to put the freaking nail in the coffin and I missed Theo Johnson on a quick [pass in the] flat."
The collapse proved too much for Giants management, who fired defensive coordinator Shane Bowen the following day after his unit allowed 34 points and nearly 500 yards of total offense.
Outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen will take over as interim defensive coordinator.
Kafka had promised to evaluate everything after taking over for fired head coach Brian Daboll two weeks earlier.
But his game management decisions show he learned nothing from Daboll's mistakes.
The Giants entered the fourth quarter leading by 10 points against one of the NFL's best teams and found a way to lose anyway.
That's become the franchise's signature move under a parade of coaches who can't figure out how to finish games.
Trump's reaction perfectly captured what every Giants fan was thinking watching another winnable game slip away due to coaching malpractice.
The Giants have become the league's biggest joke, and Kafka's inexplicable decision-making just proved they haven't hit rock bottom yet.
