Tim Walz is staring down the most explosive confrontation between state and federal authorities since the Civil War era.
The embattled Minnesota Governor just made a move that nobody saw coming.
And Tim Walz just issued one order that has Trump Administration officials ready to fight.
Governor mobilizes troops to shield operations from federal investigators
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz issued a warning order to prepare the state's National Guard for possible deployment — and conservatives across the country immediately recognized what he's really doing.
Walz is mobilizing state troops to interfere with federal agents investigating the $9 billion fraud scandal that just forced him to drop his reelection bid.
The Governor held a tense news conference where he announced the mobilization order and made clear the federal government isn't welcome in Minnesota.
"We've never been at war with our federal government," Walz stated.
That's technically true — but no governor has mobilized troops against federal law enforcement since segregationist Democrats tried blocking desegregation in the 1960s.
Walz activated Minnesota's State Emergency Operations Center and deployed 85 members of the State Patrol's Mobile Response Team to the Twin Cities.
Minnesota National Guard leadership confirmed they're conducting necessary preparations to assist state authorities if needed.
"We are preparing the National Guard," Walz said. "They are prepared to be deployed if necessary."
The timing tells you everything about what's really happening here.
Leftist activist shot after trying to run over ICE agents
The catalyst for Walz's dramatic escalation came Wednesday morning when a leftist activist interfering with federal immigration operations was shot after witnesses say she tried to run over ICE agents.
Renee Nicole Good, 37, died after an ICE agent fired through her car windshield during what federal officials described as targeted immigration enforcement operations.
The incident happened in south Minneapolis — ground zero for the Trump Administration's massive investigation into fraud that occurred under Walz's watch.
Department of Homeland Security officials said ICE agents were conducting enforcement operations when their vehicle got stuck in a snowbank.
As agents attempted to push their vehicle free, a crowd of activists surrounded them and began interfering with the operation.
Good then "weaponized her vehicle" and "attempted to run them over and ram them with her vehicle," according to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.
An ICE officer fired defensive shots, fearing for his life and the lives of his fellow agents.
Videos posted to social media show the confrontation from multiple angles.
The footage shows federal agents surrounded by activists near Good's SUV in the middle of the street.
One officer approaches the vehicle and orders Good to exit while another attempts to open the door.
Good's vehicle backs up briefly before suddenly lurching forward directly at the agents — an officer standing in front opens fire.
Good's vehicle crashes moments later into a parked car nearby.
President Trump reviewed the video and defended the agent's actions.
"The woman driving the car was very disorderly, obstructing and resisting, who then violently, willfully, and viciously ran over the ICE Officer," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The ICE agent who fired the shots had previously been injured in June 2024 when he was dragged by a car during a separate incident in Minneapolis.
These federal agents are operating in one of the most dangerous environments in the country for law enforcement — and Walz knows it.
Walz ignored $9 billion fraud for years before Trump sent investigators
Here's the context Democrats and their media allies don't want Americans to understand.
The Trump Administration didn't send 2,000 federal agents to Minneapolis because they were bored.
They're investigating what federal prosecutors estimate could be more than $9 billion in fraud across Minnesota's social services programs — fraud that occurred entirely under Walz's watch.
The schemes involved child care assistance, nutrition programs, housing assistance, Medicaid, and other taxpayer-funded programs.
Federal prosecutors have already charged more than 90 people in what's being called the nation's largest COVID-era fraud scheme.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) launched an investigation and demanded Walz testify about how the fraud spiraled out of control.
"Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison have either been asleep at the wheel or complicit in a massive fraud involving taxpayer dollars," Comer stated.
Whistleblowers inside Minnesota state agencies told Congress that Walz's administration deleted data and withheld records to cover up the fraud.
Some of the fraudulently obtained funds were allegedly sent overseas to terrorist organizations including Al-Shabaab and ISIS.
The Treasury Department is actively investigating whether American tax dollars flowed to designated foreign terrorist organizations.
Walz dropped his 2026 reelection campaign Monday — just two days before he mobilized the National Guard.
The fraud scandal made his political position untenable.
Now he's using his final months in office to obstruct the very federal investigation that exposed his failures.
Walz declares war on federal law enforcement
Walz made his position crystal clear during Wednesday's news conference.
"To Donald Trump and Kristi Noem, you've done enough," Walz said. "We do not need any further help from the federal government."
Translation: Stop investigating the fraud I ignored and stop enforcing immigration laws I refused to enforce.
The Governor called on Americans in other cities to join Minnesota's resistance against federal law enforcement.
"To Americans who are watching this, if you're in Portland or you're in LA, or you're in Chicago, or you're wherever they're coming next, stand with us," Walz said.
He's literally organizing a nationwide movement to obstruct federal agents.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey went even further and used profanity to demand ICE leave the city.
"ICE, get the f**k out of Minneapolis," Frey stated at a press conference.
These are elected officials openly calling for federal law enforcement to abandon investigations into billions in stolen taxpayer dollars.
Walz mobilizing the National Guard while telling federal agents to leave raises the obvious question conservatives are asking.
What exactly does Walz plan to do if Trump doesn't back down?
Will Minnesota Guard troops physically block ICE agents from conducting investigations?
Will they protect the addresses where fraud operations are located?
Will Walz order state forces to arrest federal agents?
The Governor won't answer those questions directly.
But his rhetoric makes clear he views the federal presence as a bigger threat than the criminal networks that stole $9 billion from American taxpayers.
"Minnesota will not allow our community to be used as a prop in a national political fight," Walz claimed.
That's rich coming from a governor who ignored massive fraud for years and only acted after a viral video exposed the schemes to millions of Americans.
Walz urged protesters to take to the streets while warning them not to give Trump the confrontation he supposedly wants.
"I feel your anger, I am angry," Walz stated. "They want a show, we can't give it to them."
Thousands gathered at a vigil for Good in Minneapolis as tensions remained high.
Federal agents deployed tear gas and pepper spray on protesters who blocked streets and interfered with operations.
Some protesters attacked the federal courthouse in Minneapolis and smashed glass doors.
This is the chaos Walz is encouraging — while simultaneously preparing National Guard troops for potential deployment.
The question now is whether Trump will let a Democrat governor use state military forces to shield fraud operations from federal investigation.
Walz bet his political career on Americans not caring about $9 billion in stolen tax dollars.
He lost that bet, which is why he's not running for reelection.
Now he's betting Trump will back down rather than confront a governor mobilizing troops.
