Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy just went on national television and didn’t hold back.
The aviation system secret he exposed has passengers across America demanding answers.
And Sean Duffy’s jaw-dropping revelation about our airports left CNN’s Jake Tapper completely speechless.
Biden administration ignored critical warnings
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy appeared on CNN Tuesday and dropped a truth bomb about the current chaos at Newark Airport that has left thousands of travelers stranded.
During his interview with Jake Tapper, Duffy revealed that the Biden administration received explicit warnings about failing FAA infrastructure but chose to do nothing.
“This is an infrastructure problem, right? And we have known this infrastructure problem has existed for a very long time. The last administration knew it. No one has done anything,” Duffy explained to Tapper.
A new Department of Transportation press release shows that the Trump administration has already launched a comprehensive “Air Traffic Control Modernization Initiative” to address the crisis they inherited from the Biden team.
The airport nightmare that’s unfolding at Newark isn’t just a local issue – it’s a preview of what could happen across the entire country if action isn’t taken immediately.
Duffy highlighted that much of America’s air traffic control infrastructure is 25 to 50 years old – practically ancient by technology standards.
“So, again, because we have such old infrastructure, it’s 25 to 50 years old, depending on what you’re talking about, that’s why you can’t let it get to this point, right, where you see issues like Newark. Could that happen somewhere else? It’s possible,” Duffy warned.
Earlier in the day, shared a clip on social media of a press conference where he addressed the issue directly.
“Biden and Buttigieg celebrated their infrastructure bill. 1.2 TRILLION dollars. The largest infrastructure package known to man. They claimed it was going to change America. They spent less than 1 percent of the money on fixing our air traffic control system. They ignored the warnings. Instead, they spent their time injecting social justice and climate equity crap into everything,” Duffy wrote in the post.

Chuck Schumer’s political games made the crisis worse
When Tapper mentioned that Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer had called for an investigation into the Newark airport mess, Duffy didn’t hold back.
Schumer took to the Senate floor asking, “Why has the staffing shortages at Newark and other critical airports been allowed to continue? What role has DOGE cuts played in aggravating the chaos?”
But Duffy revealed that Schumer himself was actually part of the problem.
“And when they do that investigation, they will find that Chuck Schumer was actually part of the problem where they were testing up new equipment to deploy in Philly,” Duffy stated.
He explained that Schumer’s “political games” prevented critical equipment from being tested properly before the TRACON (Terminal Radar Approach Control) facility was moved from New York to Philadelphia last summer under Pete Buttigieg’s watch.
“They didn’t do those things correctly, and part of the problem was Chuck Schumer. So I look forward to the I.G. investigation about what the real problems were that we’re experiencing right now, how it goes back to the games that Chuck Schumer was playing as he was the lead senator from New York,” Duffy said.
Biden’s $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill failed air travelers
Perhaps most shocking was Duffy’s revelation about the Biden administration’s much-touted $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill.
Despite the massive price tag, almost none of that money went to fix America’s crumbling air traffic control system.
“They spent $1.2 trillion on infrastructure. What has gone to the greatest infrastructure in this country, which is air traffic control? Not much. I can’t see it. And so I’m frustrated by that, as you can tell,” Duffy explained.
Trump administration takes bold action while Biden team sat idle
Rather than just talk about problems, the Trump administration is already taking decisive action to fix the air traffic control crisis. On May 1st, Secretary Duffy unveiled a comprehensive package of actions to address the controller shortage that has reached critical levels under Biden’s watch.
“In our first 100 days, this administration has made more progress on addressing the air traffic controller shortage than the last one did in four years,” Duffy announced in a Department of Transportation press release.
The ambitious plan includes:
- Bringing airlines together to reduce capacity at Newark so flights that are scheduled actually take off
- Rebuilding Newark’s communication system this summer
- Offering experienced controllers eligible for retirement a 20% bonus on their basic pay for each additional year they continue working
- Providing $5,000 awards for academy graduates who complete initial qualification training
- Offering an additional $10,000 for graduates assigned to hard-to-staff facilities
- Expanding opportunities for veteran military controllers to join the workforce
- Streamlining the hiring process from 8 steps to 5 steps, cutting five months off the timeline
- Establishing a Learning Center at the Air Traffic Controller Academy in Oklahoma City
“The supercharge hiring initiative is working,” Acting FAA Administrator Chris Rocheleau confirmed in the same release. “Less than 45 days after the announcement closed, one of the first applicants already has an Academy start date in early June.”
Even the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) has praised Duffy’s leadership, with NATCA President Nick Daniels stating, “We thank Secretary Duffy for his commitment to recruiting and retaining the best and brightest in the air traffic control profession.”
During his CNN interview, Duffy explained, “We’re going to need a lot of money from Congress to do this. It’s not going to take 10 years, like Pete suggested. It’s going to take three to four years to get this build-out done.”
The Transportation Secretary also made it clear that the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has not cut any resources for critical safety missions at the Department of Transportation.
“DOGE has had no role in cutting our critical safety mission at DOT. We have expanded that, whether they’re pipeline inspectors or rail inspectors, airline inspectors or actually air traffic controllers,” Duffy clarified.
Following the interview, Duffy took to social media to double down on his message. In a post on X , he wrote: “Even @CNN knows the air traffic control problem isn’t new. The last administration ignored it. This administration is going to solve it!”

After years of neglect under Biden and Buttigieg, it appears someone is finally taking America’s aviation crisis seriously.
