Prince William hired his late mother’s divorce lawyers
The British royal family is steeped in tradition and prefers sticking to the status quo.
Prince William broke with his family when he hired the law firm that represented his late mother, Princess Diana, in her divorce from King Charles III.
The royal family used the legal firm of Harbottle & Lewis for decades.
William parted with tradition when he hired Mishcon de Reya – the powerhouse international law firm that his mother used.
Mishcon de Reya deputy chairman Anthony Julius was hired by the Prince of Wales.
The firm was founded by the late Lord Victor Mishcon – the lead divorce lawyer for Diana.
Julius was one of Princess Diana’s attorneys in 1996 during her divorce from Charles.
She died in a car crash in Paris, France, one year after her high-profile split.
The decision shocked the royal family.
Charles has used Harbottle & Lewis for decades, and Gerrard Tyrrell, one of the firm’s partners, is a close advisor to the royal family.
A source told the Daily Mail that William made the decision because he wanted to do things his own way.
“William wanted to strike out on his own. He did not want to continue using his father’s lawyers. It’s as simple as that. He wants to be his own man,” a source told the Daily Mail. “William wants to do things differently from his father, and wants to be seen to do them differently.”
Julius has a relationship with William from his work on the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund until it was shuttered in 2012.
Royal insiders see the decision to switch law firms as William striking a different path than his family.
“William’s decision to branch out from his father’s legal advisers shows that he is more than willing to shake up the status quo behind palace doors as well,” the source stated.
Prince William will make his mark on the British monarchy
76-year-old Charles has been battling an undisclosed form of cancer since last year.
William and his wife, Princess Kate Middleton, have been preparing to become the King and Queen of England behind the scenes.
The monarchy will look different under William.
He told the BBC in November 2024 that the change in generations would bring a different look to the centuries-old institution.
“I can only describe what I’m trying to do, and that’s I’m trying to do it differently, and I’m trying to do it for my generation,” William explained. “And to give you more of an understanding around it, I’m doing it with maybe a smaller ‘R’ in the royal, if you like, that’s maybe a better way of saying it.”
Prince William will put his own stamp on the British royal family when he eventually ascends to the throne.
