Powerful Metro DC Democrats Just Picked Their 2028 Frontrunner and the Straw Poll Winner Should Frighten Every American

Kamala Harris cost Democrats the White House and the Senate majority in one election.

Democrats from an influential Democrat Committee in a Virginia DC suburb just held a 2028 straw poll and the woman who won it might be the last name Democrats want you to know.

But suffice to say the winner wants to abolish ICE and end your private health insurance.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez just beat Pete Buttigieg in a straw poll held in the leafy Democratic stronghold of Arlington, Virginia.

Ocasio-Cortez has spent years calling ICE a rogue agency that should not exist, and she fundraises on abolishing it.

She has built her national profile on Medicare for All, the single-payer plan that would end private health insurance as Americans know it.

The Arlington County Democratic Committee ran its informal 2028 straw poll at a picnic on July 11 at Bon Air Park.

Ocasio-Cortez pulled 33 votes.

Buttigieg, the former transportation secretary who spent years building a moderate, technocratic brand, managed only 26.

County Democratic chair Paul Ruiz tried to wave off the result. "It's just a straw poll – it's not scientific," Ruiz said.

No one else broke into double digits except two sitting governors, Wes Moore of Maryland with 12 votes and Andy Beshear of Kentucky with 11.

Gavin Newsom pulled just nine.

Kamala Harris, the party's 2024 standard bearer, mustered three.

Arlington is not some fringe activist gathering.

It is one of the wealthiest, most reliably Democratic counties in America, sitting minutes from the Capitol.

If the socialist wing of the party is winning straw polls there, the moderate lane Buttigieg was counting on may not exist anymore.

This is not an isolated data point.

Ocasio-Cortez's allies have been running the table in Democratic primaries all year, and the establishment keeps losing.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani's endorsed candidates knocked off five sitting House Democrats in June, including Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairman Adriano Espaillat.

Brad Lander beat Rep. Dan Goldman by nearly 32 points.

Democratic Socialists of America candidates won eight of nine legislative races the same night.

In California, a Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez backed challenger beat the party leadership's own pick.

Vice President JD Vance has been saying for weeks that Ocasio-Cortez, not Newsom, is the real frontrunner.

Ocasio-Cortez has refused to shut the door on a run, telling one reporter only that maybe she would and maybe she would not.

She has also gloated openly online about polling ahead of Vance in a hypothetical matchup, posting a single word: "Bloop!"

Back in Arlington, the local races told the same story.

County Board Chair Matt de Ferranti, seeking a third term, is already facing blowback from his own base.

Challenger James DeVita told the picnic crowd de Ferranti has done nothing to fix the county's affordability crisis.

"Arlington has gone straight downhill under his leadership," DeVita said.

Rep. Don Beyer, the district's longtime incumbent, still won the separate congressional straw poll with 93 votes.

But even Beyer's own party is drifting toward the people trying to primary the Buttigiegs and de Ferrantis of the world out of existence.

Democrats keep telling reporters this is all just noise, insisting a sitting congresswoman from the Bronx cannot actually win a national primary.

Arlington's donors, the same donors writing checks for Virginia's most electable Democrats, just told a pollster something different with their own ballots.

Schumer should be paying closer attention than anyone.

Ocasio-Cortez has spent the last year using a possible Senate run against him as leverage, tearing into him publicly over his handling of a government funding fight.

If she takes the White House route instead, Democrats will have handed their presidential nomination fight to the same movement that just gutted the party's House leadership from the inside.

Buttigieg spent years positioning himself as the electable alternative to the party's left flank.

A twenty dollar picnic in Arlington just showed his own base is not buying it anymore.
