The Department of Homeland Security just revealed numbers that have Washington insiders stunned.
A dramatic shift has occurred in just five months that even Trump’s critics can’t ignore.
And one policy reversal by President Trump and Secretary Noem has completely transformed three critical agencies in ways nobody saw coming.
DHS sees massive surge in applications since January
For years under the Biden-Harris administration, America’s vital homeland security agencies struggled to find new recruits.
Low morale, lack of support from leadership, and an administration that seemed more focused on investigating its own agents than backing them up led to a severe recruitment crisis.
But that’s all changed dramatically.
The Department of Homeland Security announced that applications across its major agencies have skyrocketed since President Trump returned to the White House in January.
“Under President Trump and Secretary Noem’s leadership, our men and women in uniform are respected again and empowered to do their jobs,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
The turnaround has been nothing short of remarkable.
The U.S. Border Patrol, which struggled to maintain staffing levels during the historic border crisis under Biden, has seen applications surge by an astonishing 44% compared to the same period last year.
From January to May 2025, the agency received nearly 35,000 applications – more than any five-month stretch in its history.
Secret Service applications triple after DEI programs canceled
The Secret Service, which faced intense scrutiny after multiple security failures during the Biden administration, has seen perhaps the most dramatic transformation.
Applications to join the elite agency have skyrocketed by an incredible 200%, with over 22,000 Americans applying in just five months. During the same period last year, the agency received only 7,000 applications.
DHS officials noted that Secretary Noem’s decision to cancel all DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) programs and hiring practices at the Secret Service appears to have played a significant role in this remarkable increase.
The focus on selecting the most qualified candidates regardless of background seems to be resonating with potential recruits across the country.
Coast Guard exceeding recruitment goals after border enforcement boost
The U.S. Coast Guard faced perhaps the most severe recruiting challenges under the previous administration, consistently falling short of its targets year after year.
But the tide has turned dramatically under President Trump and Secretary Noem. After ordering the Coast Guard to triple its presence at America’s maritime borders and focus on interdicting drug and human smuggling operations, interest in joining the service has surged.
The Coast Guard is now on pace to exceed its recruitment goals by an impressive 110%. In fiscal year 2025 alone, the service has brought in 4,250 new recruits – a stunning 1,200 more than over the same period last year.
“Americans want to be part of agencies that have clear missions and the authority to accomplish them,” Secretary Noem said in a statement. “Under President Trump’s leadership, we’ve returned to common-sense border enforcement and given our brave men and women the tools they need to succeed.”
Turnaround follows years of recruiting struggles
The remarkable turnaround comes after years of recruiting difficulties that plagued homeland security agencies during the Biden administration.
Border Patrol agents, in particular, faced constant criticism from administration officials, with many feeling abandoned as millions of illegal immigrants poured across the southern border.
The Secret Service battled low morale following several high-profile security lapses, including the assassination attempts against former President Trump that occurred under their watch.
And the Coast Guard struggled to maintain its force as its mission was increasingly diverted away from border security and maritime interdiction.
The transformation in recruiting numbers suggests that clear direction and support from leadership makes a significant difference in attracting new personnel to these critical agencies.
McLaughlin summed up the transformation: “Since President Trump took office, more Americans have applied to join the Border Patrol than any time in its history; Secret Service applications have surged 200%; and the US Coast Guard is now on pace to exceed recruitment by 110%. America can be proud of its brave men and women who are making America safe again.”
The surge in applications comes as President Trump has directed all homeland security agencies to prioritize border enforcement and domestic security – a stark contrast to the previous administration’s approach.
