Mitch McConnell was steaming mad when a top Republican called out this act of sabotage

Mar 24, 2025

Three Key Takeaways:

  • House Majority Whip Tom Emmer criticized the Senate for delaying action on Trump’s legislative agenda, specifically border security and tax cuts, urging them to speed up the process.
  • Emmer highlighted the risk of voters not seeing the results of these bills before the 2024 midterm elections if the Senate continues to drag its feet.
  • Trump and Emmer pushed for a unified “one big bill” that would address multiple priorities, while the Senate considered separate bills, creating a divide within the Republican Party.

Donald Trump is moving as fast as possible to enact his agenda.

Not everyone in the party is on board.

And Mitch McConnell was steaming mad when a top Republican called out this act of sabotage.

House Republican warns the Senate is dragging their feet on Trump’s agenda

President Donald Trump has moved at the speed of light with executive orders and actions to enact his agenda.

But he’s still waiting on Congress to deliver major legislation for him to sign.

Trump hoped to have a border security bill passed early in his second term that included billions in funding for mass deportations, border security, and to complete his border wall.

Congress is also debating an extension and expansion of his landmark 2017 tax cut bill.

Many of the original tax cuts are set to expire in December.

Congress will use the budget reconciliation process to pass both of those bills so they can bypass a Senate filibuster by Democrats.

The debate is over whether to pass two separate bills to give negotiators more time to finalize the tax cuts or to pass one big bill.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) urged the Senate to “pick up the pace” on passing Trump’s legislative priorities.

The recently passed budget resolution that passed Congress to keep the government funded set the stage for the debate on the reconciliation bills to begin in earnest.

Emmer warned that the Senate is moving too slowly on the reconciliation bill.

Trump needs to get the Senate moving

The longer the debate on the reconciliation bill drags on, the longer it will take voters to see the results from the legislation.

Voters in next year’s Midterm Elections might not see the effects of the bill if the Senate continues to drag its feet.

“I think the President might have to get involved there,” Emmer said. “The Senate has a certain physical memory that they’ve developed over the last 30 years. They don’t do anything. They sit still. They think the world’s going to wait for them, and when they’re good and ready, they’ll get moving.”

Emmer praised the Senate for its swift work on confirming Trump’s cabinet, but argued they needed to get it in gear on reconciliation.

“All of a sudden now you’re starting to hear someone [say] well, we might get to that in August,” Emmer stated.

One Republican Senator said it could take until August on the reconciliation bill.

“I got news for you,” Emmer said. “We’re going to get to it as soon as we can. The American people are counting on it. Donald Trump is demanding it. It’s going to happen. They’re [the Senate] going to have to get a little urgency under their backside.”

The House wants a reconciliation bill with border security, tax cuts, and other priorities all rolled into one massive bill.

While the Senate wants to do separate bills.

Trump has endorsed the House’s “one, big beautiful bill.”

Emmer hoped for late April or May for when the bill would be finished.

“I do think the Senate’s probably got to pick up the pace a little bit on some of that policy stuff,” Emmer stated.

Regardless of what the bigger strategy is, the Republican establishment needs to get moving on passing Donald Trump’s legislative agenda.
