Donald Trump masters the art of new media
In both of Donald Trump’s election wins – 2016 and 2024 – Trump ran circles around his Democrat opponents by mastering a cutting-edge media strategy.
Trump won the 2016 election because he turned Twitter into a 24/7 communications platform where he could speak directly to voters without the left-wing media filtering his comments.
In 2024, Trump appeared on every podcast that would have him, culminating with an interview on Joe Rogan’s show that drew 45,000,000 views on YouTube in 24 hours.
Podcasts like Rogan are how you attract a mass audience.
It used to be the Sunday shows and network news broadcasts.
But the highest-rated Sunday show is CBS’ Face the Nation, which draws a paltry 2.8 million viewers per episode.
ABC World News Tonight is the number one evening newscast, averaging 7.7 million viewers in the 2023-2024 season.
Joe Rogan dwarfs both as his show averaged 14,000,000 listeners per episode.
Jon Stewart interviewed historian and Joe Biden speechwriter Jon Meacham on his podcast, and Stewart expressed his concern that Democrats were behind the curve on the shifting media landscape where legacy outlets were bleeding audiences and podcasts – which tend to lean anti-establishment and thus pro-Trump – were ascendent.
“Every new media is going to create some kind of a change in structure, a kind of seismic shift, whether it was radio, whether it was TV. I think they are better at this new media,” Stewart began.
Stewart compared Republicans lapping Democrats in the podcast era to how in 1960 John Kennedy beat Richard Nixon by understanding television was a visual media ahead of their debate.
Kennedy was tanned and perfectly made up, whereas Nixon’s sweating and furtive conduct made Kennedy look like he was calm and ready to step into the role of Commander in Chief.
“They are Kennedy and television when it comes to this new media as opposed to — and I think the Democrats are Nixon with the sweaty lip going, ‘I don’t need makeup, I look great!’” Stewart exclaimed.
The rise of the new media and podcasts, which lean anti-establishment, really took off after the 2016 election when so-called “mainstream” media began pressuring Big Tech companies to censor conservatives, claiming “misinformation” online led to Donald Trump’s victory.
COVID only added an accelerant as Big Tech and media censorship about the lab leak theory, mask mandates, lockdowns, and vaccines pushed even more Americans to seek alternative news sources that would tell the truth.
Since these podcasters were naturally suspicious of the COVID authorities, they became fertile grounds for Trump supporters as audiences grew.
Democrats and the media dismissed podcasters like Joe Rogan as fringe kooks, only to realize Rogan was the mainstream.
