John Kennedy Went on Fox News and Revealed Exactly Why Trump Got Mad as a Mama Wasp About DHS Contracts

Mar 9, 2026

John Kennedy just said four words on Fox News that told you everything Washington didn't want you to know.

A Cabinet secretary burned a quarter billion of your tax dollars on ads starring herself – then lied to Congress about who approved it.

Trump picked up the phone and called John Kennedy directly, and what happened next you need to hear.

John Kennedy Grilled Kristi Noem on the $220 Million No-Bid DHS Contract

Kennedy had smelled something wrong long before the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on March 3.

One of the ad contractors – Safe America Media – was created just 11 days before Noem handed it a $143 million no-bid contract.

Most of that money flowed straight to the Strategy Group, a firm whose CEO is married to Noem's former DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin.

Corey Lewandowski – Noem's top adviser, operating as a special government employee while refusing to disclose who else was paying him – had worked with that same firm for years.

Kennedy pressed Noem hard on the numbers at the hearing.

He told her a quarter billion dollars in TV spots featuring her on horseback at Mount Rushmore looked a lot more like a campaign ad than a border enforcement message.

Noem looked back at him and said Trump had personally tasked her with the campaign and approved every bit of it.

Kennedy wasn't buying it.

Trump Called Kennedy Personally After Noem Testified He Approved the Ad Campaign

Hours after the hearing ended, Kennedy's phone rang.

It was the president.

Trump told Kennedy he had nothing to do with the ad campaign and was furious Noem had said otherwise under oath before the United States Senate.

Kennedy told Fox News host Will Cain exactly what Trump sounded like on that call: mad as a mama wasp.

Kennedy told Cain he believed the president completely.

He also told Cain he left that call knowing exactly what was coming.

Two days later, Trump posted on Truth Social that Noem was out – the first Cabinet firing of his second term.

Kristi Noem Was Fired After Defending the $220 Million DHS Ad Campaign to Congress

Let's be clear about what happened here.

Noem bypassed the competitive bidding process that exists precisely to prevent insider dealing.

She used a national emergency declaration at the border as legal cover to skip open competition and steer contracts to firms with deep personal ties to her own team.

The company that landed the biggest contract – $143 million – didn't exist until 11 days before she signed the paperwork.

That money then flowed to a firm run by the husband of her own press secretary.

Lewandowski, who was approving DHS contracts despite not being a paid government employee, had worked with that same firm for years.

Kennedy told Noem straight to her face at the hearing that the ads were more effective at boosting her name recognition than stopping illegal immigration.

He was right.

Kennedy has been in the Senate since 2017 and there is nobody on Capitol Hill quite like him.

He calls it in plain Louisiana English that your grandfather would understand on the first pass.

When he told Will Cain that Kristi Noem was dead as fried chicken, he wasn't editorializing.

He was delivering a verdict.

The president had called him personally – furious – to make clear Noem had blamed him before Congress for a quarter-billion-dollar vanity campaign he never approved.

Trump didn't fire her for the border deaths in Minneapolis.

He didn't fire her for the Lewandowski rumors.

He didn't fire her for stonewalling the inspector general.

He fired her because she sat in front of the United States Senate, put words in his mouth, and then Trump had to call a senator to clean it up himself.

Kennedy did exactly what senators are supposed to do – asked hard questions, caught the contradiction, and let Trump draw his own conclusions.

Trump saw it, made the call, and had her out the door inside 48 hours.

That's the accountability your tax dollars deserve – and Democrats who spent four years burning this country down never once delivered it.
