The Left celebrated Charlie Kirk's assassination in September.
But the attacks on his widow just crossed a line that even one Democrat couldn't stomach.
And John Fetterman shocked Washington by defending Charlie Kirk's widow after this vicious attack.
Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman put his Democrat colleagues on notice when he came to the defense of Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk's widow who took over as CEO of Turning Point USA after her husband's brutal assassination.
The attack came from Jennifer Welch, a washed-up reality TV star who now makes her living spewing left-wing garbage on her podcast "I've Had It."
Welch went after Erika Kirk with a vengeance that left even hardened political observers stunned by the viciousness.
Liberal podcaster launches disgusting attack on grieving widow
Jennifer Welch dedicated an entire segment of her December 7 podcast episode to tearing apart Erika Kirk.
"This woman should be kicked to the curb," Welch snarled on air. "She is an absolute grifter, just like Donald Trump, and just like her unrepentant, racist, homophobic husband was."¹
The attack wasn't about political disagreement.
Welch was going after a mother of two whose husband was shot dead in front of thousands just three months ago.
The rage stemmed from Erika Kirk's December 3 appearance at The New York Times DealBook Summit where she had the audacity to suggest Manhattan career women shouldn't rely on government instead of marriage and family.
"You are an opportunistic grifter who weaponizes your gender to demean women, and you are a walking, talking, breathing example as to why nobody, number one, wants to be a Christian, and number two, wants to be a female hypocrite such as yourself," Welch continued her tirade.²
Co-host Angie Sullivan piled on, claiming "maybe there's more to life than identifying yourself as someone's wife or someone's mother."
This is the Left's idea of compassion for a widow still processing trauma from watching her husband murdered.
Charlie Kirk was assassinated on September 10, 2025, shot by a sniper while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.
Fetterman breaks with Democrat Party mob mentality
John Fetterman – who faces a tough 2026 re-election bid – watched Welch's disgusting performance and saw an opening to express he’d had enough.
"It's gross and dehumanizing to attack a widow with young children after just witnessing his public assassination," Fetterman posted on X. "It shouldn't be controversial to put our political views aside and extend the grace for a deeply traumatized family to grieve."³
The Pennsylvania Senator shared a screenshot of Fox News Digital's coverage of Welch's attack when he made his statement.
What makes Fetterman's defense remarkable is that it came while most Democrats either stayed silent or quietly approved of the attacks on Erika Kirk.
The radical Left has spent months attacking Erika Kirk for everything from how she grieved to what she wore to her media appearances.
They want her to disappear because she refuses to play the victim and instead has become a powerful voice carrying forward her husband's conservative message.
Fetterman's stance put him at odds with the dominant voices in his own party who believe attacking Charlie Kirk's widow is acceptable because they disagreed with his politics.
Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace, who's running for South Carolina governor, publicly thanked Fetterman.
"Thank you Sen. Fetterman," Mace posted on X in response to his defense of Erika Kirk.⁴
Fox News political analyst Gianno Caldwell also backed Fetterman's position, writing "I absolutely agree with you."⁵
Democrat Party's grotesque double standard exposed
The contrast couldn't be starker.
When Charlie Kirk was assassinated, Democrats demanded Republicans tone down their rhetoric and accused conservatives of using divisive language.
Now those same Democrats are either attacking his widow or remaining silent while left-wing activists tear her apart for grieving wrong.
Fetterman has consistently broken with his party on issues where basic human decency conflicts with Democrat orthodoxy.
He condemned political violence after Kirk's assassination when other Democrats were making excuses or downplaying the tragedy.
He later appeared on Katie Couric's podcast where she tried repeatedly to get him to attack Charlie Kirk's legacy and criticize President Trump for honoring Kirk posthumously.
Fetterman refused to take the bait.
"Yeah, I agree. I mean, I think we agree that we probably didn't agree with much of what he said. And I'm sure we both agree that you shouldn't shoot people and you shouldn't execute them in public," Fetterman told Couric.⁶
Jennifer Welch represents everything Americans despise about modern progressive politics – bitter, angry, and willing to attack a grieving widow to score political points.
Turning Point USA spokesperson Andrew Kolvet summed up Welch perfectly in a statement to Newsweek.
"I would say shame on her, but that would be assuming she has some. I sincerely hope she seeks the help she needs for whatever it is that has made her so profoundly unpleasant."⁷
John Fetterman's willingness to defend Erika Kirk shows there are still Democrats who understand that some lines shouldn't be crossed.
But his isolation in doing so reveals just how far the Democrat Party has descended into pure hatred for anyone who dares challenge their worldview.
