Jack Smith was blindsided when Donald Trump threw him one curveball he never expected

Feb 27, 2025

Jack Smith thought he was going to ride off into the sunset.

But he got a rude wake-up call.

And Jack Smith was blindsided when Donald Trump threw him one curveball he never expected.

Donald Trump strips security clearances for law firm that helped Jack Smith

Former Special Counsel Jack Smith filed a disclosure form in January at the end of his time working for the Biden Justice Department that raised eyebrows.

Smith received $140,000 in free legal advice from the Washington, D.C. law firm of Covington & Burling.

Covington & Burling has deep ties to the Democrat Party, and counts former Obama Attorney General Eric Holder as one of its lawyers.

The disclosure form never mentioned what the pro bono legal services that Smith received were for.

Smith is legally allowed to receive free legal help, as long as he discloses and receives approval from the Justice Department.

Former President Joe Biden was rumored to be considering giving Smith a blanket pardon, but he never followed through.

President Donald Trump issued a memorandum that stripped the security clearances of employees working at Covington & Burling.

The memorandum also ordered that the federal government suspend any contracts that it has with the law firm.

One of the attorneys at Covington & Burling who lost his security clearance was Smith’s former boss at the Obama Justice Department.

Covington & Burling Vice Chair Lanny Breuer was the Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s Criminal Division under former President Barack Obama.

Breuer brought Smith onboard to head up the Obama Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section.

He was also one of the attorneys at the law firm who provided Smith with free legal advice.

Donald Trump savors stripping security clearances of Smith allies

Smith led two sham criminal cases against Trump that never made it to trial.

The President told reporters in the Oval Office that he hoped the weaponization of the justice system was at an end.

“This is a good one. Is everybody listening? Deranged Jack Smith — we’re going to call it the deranged Jack Smith signing or bill,” Trump said. “The weaponization of our system by law firms, even pro bono work they’re doing just in order to clog up government, stop government, and nobody knows about it more than me, and hopefully that’ll never happen again.”

A journalist tried to ask Trump an unrelated question about Europe but he was shut down.

“Wait, I just want to savor this one, please,” Trump replied.

Trump showed the pen he used to sign the memorandum to the reporters present.

“Who would like this pen?” Trump asked. “Why don’t you send it to Jack Smith? A deranged person.”

Another reporter asked Trump if he was concerned that his order would make it appear that he was targeting people connected to Smith.

“Excuse me,” Trump fired back. “I’ve been targeted for four years, longer than that. So you don’t tell me about targeting. I was the target of corrupt politicians for four years, and then four years after that. So don’t talk to me about targeting.”
