Democrats spent years promising affordable healthcare for all Americans.
Now their own leader can't decide what that means.
And Hakeem Jeffries got caught in one healthcare flip-flop that exposed Democrats' real problem.
Democrats face healthcare crisis as Obamacare subsidies expire
Enhanced Obamacare subsidies are set to vanish at the end of 2025, and Democrats have no plan to save them.
The Enhanced Premium Tax Credits, which Democrats rammed through during the pandemic, will expire on December 31st.
That means 22 million Americans will watch their health insurance premiums more than double in 2026.
Average premiums will spike from $888 per year to $1,904 according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.¹
But House Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries can't explain what his party plans to do about it.
Back in 2019, Jeffries announced he was cosponsoring Medicare for All legislation championed by radical leftist Representative Pramila Jayapal.²
He called for a complete government takeover of healthcare.
Then he also cosponsored a "public option" bill to compete with private insurance, hedging his bets in both directions.³
Fast forward to today, and Jeffries won't commit to either position as the subsidy cliff approaches.
Some Democrats want to use the crisis to push Medicare for All, while other Democrats just want to keep throwing taxpayer money at subsidies – either option is likely to benefit really only the giant insurance companies.
But Americans face skyrocketing costs unless we actually undue Obamacare.
Republican leaders slam Democrats' healthcare hypocrisy
House Energy and Commerce Chairman Brett Guthrie slammed Democrats for having no real solutions.
"Democrats' divide on Medicare-for-All further confirms the lack of solutions they have to address the health care affordability crisis they created," Guthrie told Breitbart News.⁴
He's right to call them out.
Republicans passed the Lower Health Care Premiums for All American Act, which would lower premiums by 11 percent and save $35.6 billion according to the Congressional Budget Office.⁵
That’s of course just postponing the real solution of actually letting there be a free market. Hint there isn’t currently.
While Democrats can't agree on whether to pursue socialist healthcare or just keep propping up insurance company profits, Republicans are offering something.
Republican Study Committee Chairman August Pfluger didn't mince words about Jeffries backing Medicare for All.
"Minority Leader Jeffries' decision to back a Medicare for All plan shows a reckless disregard for fiscal reality and patient care," Pfluger stated. "Single-payer systems have proven to do nothing more than bankrupt governments while patients pay the price with fewer choices and worse coverage."⁶
Pfluger and Senator Rick Scott introduced the More Affordable Care Act, which takes a completely different approach than Democrats' failed policies.
Instead of funneling billions to insurance companies, the Republican plan establishes Trump Health Freedom Accounts.
These Health Savings Account-style accounts put federal healthcare dollars directly into patients' hands to spend as they see fit.⁷
The bill lets Americans shop for health insurance across state lines and requires hospitals to post actual prices upfront.
President Trump championed healthcare price transparency in his first term.
Economists Steve Forbes, Arthur Laffer, and Larry Van Horn estimated Trump's transparency reforms could save families up to $11,000 per year.⁸
Democrats created this healthcare mess
Democrats own this disaster.
They passed the Enhanced Premium Tax Credits through the American Rescue Plan in 2021 and extended them through the so-called Inflation Reduction Act.⁹
But they set the subsidies to expire instead of making them permanent because they knew the cost was unsustainable.
Now Democrats are scrambling to extend subsidies America can't afford while ignoring the underlying problems driving healthcare costs higher.
Their solution is always the same: throw more taxpayer money at the problem.
Republicans want to empower patients to make their own healthcare decisions with their own dollars.
"In stark contrast to Democrats' plan, House Republicans are committed to driving down health care costs by expanding access, increasing competition, and putting patients back in charge of their health care," Pfluger concluded.¹⁰
The choice couldn't be clearer.
Democrats offer government control and skyrocketing costs.
Republicans offer patient freedom and real competition to drive down prices.
Hakeem Jeffries won't commit to either Medicare for All or keeping things as they are because Democrats have no real plan beyond maintaining power over Americans' healthcare decisions.
