A Maine political outlet reported it has confirmed Troy Jackson has two kids with his second cousin.
Then a reporter cornered him in Washington and asked the one question nobody expected him to answer honestly.
What Jackson panicked into saying next turned a simple date night question into a trap of his own making.
A Fifth-Generation Logger Who Cannot Name a Single Restaurant Near His Own Hometown
Democrats needed a clean replacement for Graham Platner after his campaign collapsed under a sexual assault allegation he denies.
They got Troy Jackson instead.
Within days of Jackson locking down the nomination to challenge Senator Susan Collins, the Maine Wire dropped a story that made the whole party wince.
Jackson's longtime partner, Lana Pelletier, is his second cousin, and the pair have two children together without ever bothering to get married.
The outlet put it about as gently as it could be put, noting the relationship is "close enough for small-town knowing glances, distant enough that the law and biology shrug."
Legal, sure.
Normal for a United States Senate nominee in 2026, not so much.

Thomas Jefferson married his third cousin, and John Adams did the same, and Franklin Roosevelt kept it in the family with Eleanor.
None of those men needed a reporter to trap them into confessing it in a hallway.
So when Townhall's Matthew Foldi and Storm Paglia caught up with Jackson on Capitol Hill and asked him, of all things, for date night advice, the question was never really about restaurants.
Jackson's body language gave him away before he said a word, the stiff, cornered shift of a man who already knows exactly where a question is headed.
Asked if there was anywhere worth checking out in the Acadia region or Bar Harbor, Jackson could not name a single place.
"There's Mike, uh, uh," he stammered, before landing on a lobster spot he thinks exists in Franklin.
Then came the line nobody in that hallway will ever forget.
"All I did was go to their beach," Jackson said, apparently forgetting for a moment exactly which "their" he was talking about.

Democrats Handed Susan Collins the Weirdest Opposition Research File in Maine History
This is not Jackson's first bad week, and it will not be his last.
The Daily Signal reported that Jackson hurled a plastic water bottle at a female colleague during a closed-door Democratic caucus meeting five years ago.
A Republican state senator told the outlet the incident spread through the State House like wildfire.
Jackson's campaign has admitted the water bottle throw happened while insisting he was not aiming at anyone.
Reports have also documented unresolved questions over Jackson's mortgage paperwork and a legislative career marked by outbursts serious enough that fellow Democrats raised them directly with the governor.
Jackson spent months as one of Graham Platner's most visible defenders, continuing to campaign alongside him even as the Reddit posts and tattoo controversy piled up.
He kept defending Platner until Democratic leadership in Washington ran out of road and forced Platner out entirely.
Now Jackson is the man holding the bag, and Susan Collins has not had to lift a finger to make him look unelectable.
Every fresh headline reminds Maine voters that Chuck Schumer's national party was this desperate to keep the seat that it settled for a nominee who cannot get through a hallway interview without imploding.
The kissin' cousins story alone would sink most campaigns in a state as small and gossip-fluent as Maine.

Paired with a temper problem and a mortgage cloud, it starts to look less like bad luck and more like a pattern Democrats chose to ignore because they needed a body on the ballot by July 27.
Bernie Sanders spent months vouching for the movement Platner built, and Jackson inherited both the movement and the baggage without anyone bothering to check what else was buried in Allagash.
Voters in Bar Harbor now know two things about their new Senate nominee: he cannot name a restaurant in his own state, and he apparently did not need one.
That is not a gaffe.
That is a preview of every debate stage between now and November, with Susan Collins standing next to him doing nothing but smiling.
