Gavin Newsom wants to run for President in 2028.
His party may have other ideas.
And Gavin Newsom got some bad news he never saw coming when Democrats revolted.
California needs a $3 billion loan for illegal aliens’ taxpayer-funded healthcare
California Governor Gavin Newsom was widely praised among Democrats after his state made illegal aliens eligible for Medi-Cal, the state-run Medicaid system, at the beginning of 2024.
Illegal aliens living in California could get free or low-cost healthcare courtesy of taxpayers.
Medi-Cal would even pay for sex change operations for them.
The cost of providing taxpayer-funded healthcare to illegal aliens has exploded, leaving the state struggling to pay for it.
Newsom had to get a $3.4 billion loan through March.
The cost of covering illegal aliens with Medi-Cal was expected to be $6.4 billion but clocked in at $9.5 billion.
Medi-Cal’s shortfall has Republican and Democrat lawmakers in California demanding answers with a massive budget deficit.
California Assemblyman Carl DeMaio (R-CA) slammed Newsom for the state’s latest handout to illegal aliens.
“Gavin Newsom has now put Medi-Cal on the brink of financial collapse because he decided to gift free health care to illegal immigrants a year ago,” DeMaio said. “It’s time for this madness to stop. It’s time for us to protect citizens rather than prioritizing illegal immigrants at their expense.”
The Newsom administration blamed the shortfall on rising healthcare costs, which they claimed was a national problem.
Democrats want answers from Newsom about illegal alien healthcare costs
California State Senator Roger Niello (R-CA) wanted to hold a hearing to get to the bottom of the shortfall.
“There are all these issues that I’m willing to admit are part of it, but we won’t know, the citizens won’t know, unless we have a [budget] hearing on this,” Niello said.
California State Senator Maria Elena Durazo (D-CA) pushed to expand Medi-Cal to include illegal aliens.
She wanted Newsom to be more transparent about what caused the cost overruns.
“Our goal was to get as many people as possible onto health care, and we’ve accomplished that goal,” Durazo explained. “As Californians, we should be very proud that we’ve gotten closer to everyone having access to health care, that was our explicit goal. We weren’t hiding about that.”
California State Senator Akilah Weber Pierson (D-CA), the chair of the Senate health budget committee, was blindsided by the news.
“The loan is the only thing that I’ve heard of. Now, are we going to need more? I do not know. I did not get a clear answer,” Pierson stated.
Newsom could have more problems coming his way as Republicans in Congress look to trim federal spending.
Former L.A. Care Health Plan CEO John Baackes admitted that covering illegal aliens could be on the chopping block because of cuts from Congress.
“I would consider [health care coverage for illegal aliens] in jeopardy,” Baackes said. “If I were Gavin Newsom, I’d be balancing this against that $40 billion [federal] request for the LA fires.”
California wants $40 billion in disaster relief for the Los Angeles wildfires.
Gavin Newsom’s Presidential ambitions could be undone by the constant state of crisis in California.
