Florida needs a new Senator.
Donald Trump naming Marco Rubio as his nominee for Secretary of State created a vacancy in the United States Senate.
It’s up to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to pick someone to fill the vacancy.
But this selection will have to win a GOP primary and a general election in 2026.
That puts DeSantis in a difficult spot.
Trump harbors resentment towards DeSantis over DeSantis running against him in 2024.
The 47th President believes DeSantis showed a lack of loyalty by challenging him for the nomination.
If Trump perceives the pick as a DeSantis loyalist as opposed to someone committed to the Trump agenda, then Trump could endorse a primary challenger.
The last thing Republicans need in what figures to be a difficult 2026 midterm environment is a messy and expensive primary in Florida, which is now the capital of red state America.
DeSantis is apparently looking to thread the needle by naming Trump-daughter-in-law Lara Trump as the new Senator from Florida.
“Those close to the 42-year-old mother of two say she is Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ definitive top choice to replace Rubio in the DC trenches,” a source close to Lara Trump told the New York Post.
“That’s a fact,” the source said of Lara Trump – who served in a lead position for the Republican National Committee.
Trump is getting encouragement from new GOP powerbroker Elon Musk to pursue the seat, but it’s still up in the air as to if she wants the job.
“But she needs to make a decision. That’s hard when Elon and everyone else is encouraging you to do it,” the source concluded.
All wings of the GOP weigh in for Lara Trump
The MAGA wing of the party came in full force for Lara Trump in the Senate.
“Lara Trump is genuinely great,” Elon Musk wrote in a post on X in response to the idea of Lara Trump in the Senate.
Florida Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna also urged Governor DeSantis to pick Trump to replace Rubio.
“@LaraLeaTrump needs to be the nominated replacement by @GovDeSantis for Rubio. She will keep the seat and avoid a messy primary for FLORIDA. Well spoken. Kicked butt on election integrity. Etc,” Luna wrote on X.
Conservative podcaster Benny Johnson threw his support behind Lara Trump based on her work at the Republican National Committee in the 2024 election.
“Lara has a killer instinct for reform of broken systems,” Johnson posted on social media. “Without her sharp leadership at the RNC, Trump would not have won the 2024 election in a landslide.”
“As a Florida resident, I know my voice would be represented in the US Senate best by Lara Trump,” Johnson continued. “Judging by the number of calls I’m receiving about it–I’m not alone.”
Even establishment RINOs weighed in on Trump’s side.
Alabama Senator Katie Britt never speaks before first asking Mitch McConnell for permission.
And Britt’s support for Lara Trump in the Senate stood out.
“She just got off to a historic win,” Britt said of Lara Trump in an interview with Axios.
“She understands the America First agenda. For me, I think she would be a tremendous pick, a voice for hard working families and another mom of school aged kids that understands what we’re up against, and that’s to fight to protect the American dream,” Britt concluded.
