Schumer’s pathetic response to Trump’s Harvard funding freeze
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is facing a rebellion within his own party.
His approval rating among New York Democrats plunged over 20 points as frustration mounts over his ineffectiveness at slowing down President Trump’s agenda. There’s even talk about Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez challenging Schumer in the 2028 primary.
Democrats want to see Schumer fighting. But his latest public appearance only highlighted his weakness.
The Trump administration recently announced it would withhold $2 billion in federal grants to Harvard after the university turned a blind eye to anti-Semitism on campus and refused to abolish DEI programs.
CNN’s Dana Bash asked Schumer what he thought about the move, especially since he recently wrote a book about the rise of anti-Semitism in America.
“Trump, as you well know, says he’s cracking down on Harvard and other universities because of their response, or lack thereof, to those anti-Semitic incidents that you’re describing,” Bash inquired. “How do you think he’s doing with that?”
Schumer knows if Trump is for something he needs to be against it, even if what he now opposes he once supported.
The New York Senator complained that the Trump administration treated higher education, the media, and big law firms as the proxies for the Democrat Party that they operated as for the last ten years.
“What Trump is doing goes way beyond anti-Semitism,” Schumer replied. “He is going after these universities like he’s going after judges, like he is going to after law firms, like he going after the media.”
Schumer then revealed his grand plan to fight Trump on freezing federal funding to Harvard: sending a strongly worded letter.
“Because he just doesn’t – he doesn’t believe in democracy. He thinks he’s king, as he said. And he did this at Harvard. So a bunch of us, Jewish senators, just sent a letter to the administration saying, detail the specific incidence of antisemitism and why cutting money off to cancer research or to Alzheimer’s research has anything to do with antisemitism,” Schumer added.
“So we sent him a very strong letter just the other day, asking eight very strong questions about why this isn’t just a pretext,” Schumer concluded.
This pathetic response drew mockery even from Schumer’s normal cheerleaders in the leftist media.
NBC’s Chuck Todd couldn’t help but ridicule Schumer’s weak resistance strategy on social media:

While Democrats tear themselves apart over how to counter Trump, most Americans are asking themselves why Harvard needs $2 billion in taxpayer funding in the first place when it has a $53 billion endowment.
The university could easily fund its own research programs with just a fraction of the interest from its massive endowment. Instead, hard-working Americans are footing the bill for an institution that seems more committed to radical ideology than educating students.
Schumer’s failure to mount any meaningful resistance to Trump’s agenda highlights the Democrats’ disarray as they struggle to find an effective strategy against a president who continues to deliver on his promises.
