Chuck Schumer just walked into Donald Trump’s trap and his own party is out for blood

Nov 30, 2025

Democrats thought their 48-day government shutdown would break Trump and force Republicans to cave on healthcare subsidies.

They were dead wrong.

And Chuck Schumer just walked into Donald Trump's trap and his own party is out for blood.

Trump's Oval Office meeting with Mamdani was a political grenade

Trump sat down with New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani in the Oval Office last week for what looked like a routine courtesy meeting with an incoming mayor.

Except nothing about it was routine.

The President lavished praise on the self-described democratic socialist, calling him "a very rational person" who "really wants to see New York be great again."¹

Trump even defended Mamdani against Republican attacks calling him a "jihadist," telling reporters he'd be comfortable living in New York City under Mamdani's leadership.²

When a reporter asked Mamdani if he still considered Trump a "fascist," the President laughed it off and gave him an easy out.

The whole spectacle left Democrats reeling.

A veteran GOP operative who witnessed the meeting told reporters it was a "political grenade lobbed directly into Democratic ranks."³

"To be honest, I think this pours gasoline on the internal war within the Dems," the source explained. "Further forces Dems to fully embrace Mamdani and his agenda."⁴

Trump knew exactly what he was doing.

The "Fight Club" rebellion against Schumer goes public

That political grenade just detonated.

A group of liberal senators including Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Chris Van Hollen, Tina Smith, and Chris Murphy formed what they're calling a "Fight Club" to challenge Schumer's grip on Senate Democrats.⁵

These aren't backbenchers plotting in secret.

These are some of the most influential progressive voices in the Senate openly questioning whether Schumer should continue leading their caucus.

"I can think of no historical example that would compare to this level of internal caucus fear and dissension," Democratic strategist Josh Orton said.⁶

"To be essentially a guerrilla group of senators who are raising concerns not just about one bill or one decision, but questions of leadership's entire disposition toward politics and the Trump administration, feels unique," Orton added.⁷

The Fight Club is already scheming against Schumer by targeting primaries in Maine, Michigan, and Minnesota for the 2026 midterms.⁸

They're furious that Schumer and the Democrat establishment keep backing establishment candidates instead of fighters willing to take on Trump.

The final straw was Schumer refusing to endorse Mamdani in the New York City mayor's race.

Sanders and Warren watched Trump endorse Mamdani before Schumer did — and they're done playing nice.

Schumer's shutdown disaster left Democrats in ruins

Trump didn't just beat Schumer on the government shutdown.

He humiliated him.

Democrats held the line for 48 days demanding ObamaCare subsidies be extended as part of any deal to reopen the government.

Schumer kept his caucus united longer than they wanted to stay together, even trying to keep the shutdown going through Thanksgiving.⁹

But eight Senate Democrats finally broke ranks and voted with Republicans to end the longest government shutdown in history.¹⁰

The deal gave Democrats nothing except a promise of a vote in December — which Bernie Sanders called a "meaningless gesture."¹¹

Trump openly mocked Schumer for the collapse.

"I think he made a mistake in going too far," Trump told Fox News. "He thought he could break the Republicans and the Republicans broke him."¹²

House Democrats exploded with rage at Schumer for allowing the defections.

California progressive Ro Khanna called for Schumer to "be replaced."¹³

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez accused Schumer of "denying the future" by undercutting young Democrats.¹⁴

Progressive groups MoveOn and Our Revolution launched petitions demanding Schumer resign immediately.¹⁵

Even some moderate Democrats wouldn't defend him.

Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona couldn't bring himself to say he had confidence in Schumer's leadership, only admitting it had been a "rough" time.¹⁶

Trump turned Schumer into a Democrat punching bag

Democrats are trapped.

They can't attack Trump for meeting with Mamdani because Trump praised the exact policies Democrats just shut down the government fighting for — affordability and lowering costs.

Republicans spent months preparing to tie every Democrat in the country to Mamdani's democratic socialism.

Trump just torpedoed that entire strategy by sitting next to Mamdani in the Oval Office and emphasizing how much they agree on.¹⁷

The GOP's 2026 boogeyman became Trump's new best friend in less than an hour.

That leaves Democrats with nowhere to go except at each other's throats.

Schumer faces calls to resign from House Democrats, progressive activists, and now his own Senate colleagues who formed a secret rebellion against him.

Trump engineered the whole thing by dangling Mamdani in front of Schumer and watching him refuse to endorse the future mayor of New York City.

Then Trump swooped in, praised Mamdani, and forced Democrats to either embrace Mamdani's agenda or look like they're abandoning him.

Either way, Schumer loses.

"The legacy of Chuck Schumer is caving, not winning," Adam Green of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee wrote.¹⁸

Trump broke Schumer during the shutdown and then used Mamdani to blow up whatever was left of his credibility with the Democrat base.

The Fight Club rebellion is just the beginning of Schumer's nightmare heading into 2026.
