Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson left stunned after Trump DOJ opened this shocking investigation

Chicago’s mayor is under fire for comments he made about his administration’s hiring practices.

The Trump Justice Department has him in their crosshairs for potential violations.

And Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson left stunned after the Trump DOJ opened this shocking investigation.

Trump’s Department of Justice targets Chicago’s mayor

The Trump administration promised America they would enforce the law without bias, and that’s exactly what they’re doing.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson found this out the hard way after making controversial statements about his hiring decisions.

Assistant Attorney General for the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division Harmeet Dhillon announced an investigation into Johnson’s remarks suggesting Chicago might be engaging in discriminatory hiring practices based on race.

“The Department of Justice is opening an investigation to determine whether the city of Chicago, Illinois, is engaging in a pattern or practice of discrimination based on race,” the DOJ letter states.

The investigation follows Johnson’s comments at the Apostolic Church of God in Woodlawn, where he boasted about the racial makeup of his administration’s leadership.

Mayor Johnson’s controversial comments caught on video

Johnson made the remarks that landed him in hot water during a speaking engagement, where he proudly listed off the racial makeup of key positions in his administration.

“Business and Economic Neighborhood Development, the deputy mayor is a Black woman,” Johnson declared. “Department of Planning and Development is a Black woman. Infrastructure, deputy mayor is a Black woman. Chief operations officer is a Black man. Budget director is a Black woman. Senior advisor is a Black man.”

But Johnson didn’t stop there. He went on to justify his hiring decisions with comments about racial generosity.

“There are detractors that will push back on me and say, you know, the only thing that the mayor talks about is the hiring of black people,” Johnson said. “No, what I’m saying is, when you hire our people, we always look out for everybody else. We are the most generous people on the planet.”

The Chicago mayor even added: “I don’t know too many cultures that have play cousins. That’s how generous we are. We just make somebody a family member, right? This is how we are.”

Video of Johnson’s comments quickly spread on social media, drawing national attention and ultimately the scrutiny of federal authorities.

Civil Rights Division takes action

The DOJ letter signed by Harmeet Dhillon makes it clear that federal authorities are concerned Johnson may be violating federal civil rights laws that prohibit discrimination in employment.

“If these kind of hiring decisions are being made for top-level positions in your administration, then it begs the question whether such decisions are also being made for lower-level positions,” Dhillon wrote in the letter to Johnson.

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin. Government hiring must be based on qualifications rather than protected characteristics like race.

The investigation will determine if Chicago has implemented a systematic pattern of racial discrimination in its hiring practices under Johnson’s leadership.

Political fallout begins

This investigation represents one of the first high-profile civil rights actions by the Trump Justice Department in his second term, showing the administration is willing to enforce anti-discrimination laws against political opponents.

During his campaign, Trump pledged to enforce civil rights laws equally and combat discrimination in all forms. This investigation demonstrates the administration is putting those promises into action.

Johnson, who has positioned himself as a progressive leader since taking office, now faces potentially serious legal consequences if the DOJ investigation determines Chicago’s hiring practices violate federal law.

This case could become a landmark test of how anti-discrimination laws apply to government hiring practices, especially when officials openly discuss racial considerations in their decision-making.

The investigation is still in its early stages, and Chicago officials have not yet issued a formal response to the DOJ’s letter.
