A Manhattan Man Got Fired From His New Job in Two and a Half Hours Over Hygiene

A Manhattan man searched nearly ten months for work before finally landing a corporate job.

He showed up clean, ready, and grateful, and the company fired him before his first day even ended.

The reason the company gave him is the part that has the entire internet taking his side.

Ten Months Unemployed, Then Gone Before Lunch

The man, posting on Reddit under the handle Havocko, had been out of work for nine and a half months when a temp agency placed him in a People Operations role at a large, unnamed tech company.

The job paid more than his last one.

He showed up on his first day showered and in clean clothes.

His supervisor greeted him warmly and walked him around the office.

A trainer took over around 10 a.m., and everything seemed normal.

Then the trainer got pulled into a meeting.

The supervisor suggested Havocko take an early lunch.

He was still walking out of the building when the temp agency called to tell him he was done.

Total time on the job: two and a half hours.

The Company Would Not Say What It Meant

The stated reason was "hygiene issues," and nobody would say what that actually meant.

Neither the supervisor nor the temp agency ever elaborated.

When Havocko pushed for a real explanation, the agency stopped responding to him entirely and allegedly refused to provide any termination paperwork.

A man who had submitted applications for the better part of a year with nothing to show for it was let go in under three hours over a complaint nobody would put in writing.

Havocko laid out his case point by point, starting with a detailed account of exactly how thoroughly he had washed that morning.

Two separate people who worked near him that morning said they detected no odor at all.

He brushes and flosses daily, keeps a clean home despite having pets, and does not smoke.

His only concession was that his pants "could've used a lint roller."

The Law Says the Company Never Had to Explain Itself

New York is an at-will employment state, which means a company can fire almost anyone for almost any reason, or no reason at all, without warning.

There are exceptions for discrimination, retaliation, and a handful of other protected categories, but "your coworkers think you smell wrong" is not one of them.

Employment lawyer Amy Epstein Gluck has said plainly that firings like this are usually legal, even when they are not fair.

That is the part that should bother people more than the specific insult did.

A company does not need a good reason to fire someone hours into the job.

It does not even need a real one, as long as it never has to write it down.

Havocko Is Not the Only One This Happened To

A Reddit user going by Alice14_VS was fired before her first day even started, over a start date the employer itself had listed wrong in the confirmation email.

That post drew more than 9,000 upvotes and thousands of comments from people who had lived through some version of the same thing.

One commenter summed up the reaction that both stories got: "What kind of incompetent moron sends the wrong start date as a 'confirmation' and then fires you for not showing up on the wrong date?"

Havocko's story is not a one-off anomaly circulating because it is unusual.

It is going viral because it is recognizable.

No Paper Trail, No Appeal, No Job

There is no way to independently verify every detail of Havocko's account beyond his posts and the two coworkers he says backed him up, and this story is being told from his side.

What is verifiable is the part that matters most: nobody on the employer's side ever put a specific reason in writing, on the record, to anyone.

A temp agency can end an assignment with a phone call and never have to explain itself, and that is exactly what Havocko says happened to him.

A company can fire a new hire before his first lunch break and hand him nothing but two vague words on the way out the door.

Havocko did everything right.

He searched for nearly ten months, took a placement that paid better than his last job, showed up early, showered, and ready to work.

None of that mattered once someone in that office decided he smelled wrong and never had to prove it.

One story is not a study, but it is a clean example of how the temp economy is built: all of the risk sitting on the worker, none of the accountability sitting anywhere else.
