The 2024 election just got rocked by another massive political earthquake.
This one could determine control of Congress.
And now a key Democrat just got arrested on these jaw dropping criminal charges.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams indicted
Federal authorities indicted New York City Mayor Eric Adams as part of a corruption probe.
“Eric Adams, a retired police captain who was elected as New York City’s 110th mayor nearly three years ago on a promise to rein in crime, has been indicted in a federal corruption investigation, people with knowledge of the matter said,” the New York Times reported.
The FBI previously forced Mayor Adams to turnover his cell phone and the agents raided the home of two top aides – former campaign fundraiser Brianna Suggs and international affairs aide Rana Abbasova – as part of a probe into if Adams’ 2021 Mayoral campaign solicited illegal foreign contributions from Turkey.
“The coordinated raids were the first public sign of a broad corruption investigation into the mayor’s 2021 campaign. As part of the inquiry, the F.B.I. and federal prosecutors in Manhattan are examining whether the Turkish government conspired with Mr. Adams’s campaign to funnel foreign donations into campaign coffers and whether Mr. Adams pressured Fire Department officials to sign off on a new high-rise Turkish consulate despite safety concerns,” the Times also reported.
Mayor Adams in damage control mode
As soon as news of the indictment broke, Adams released a video professing his innocence.
“My fellow New Yorkers, it is now my belief that the federal government intends to charge me with crimes,” Adams stated. “If so, these charges will be entirely false, based on lies. But, they would not be surprising.”
Adam claimed the charges were politically motivated after he criticized the Biden administration for shipping more than 100,000 illegal aliens into New York City.
“I always knew that if I stood my ground for all of you, that I would be a target,” Adams continued. “And, a target I became. For months, leaks and rumors have been aimed at me in an attempt to undermine my credibility and paint me as guilty.”
Adams claimed he was the victim of a witch hunt.
“Just this past week, they searched the home of our new police commissioner, looking for documents from twenty years ago, just one week after he joined my administration,” Adams continued. “Enough. I will fight these injustices with every ounce of my strength and my spirit. If I’m charged, I know I’m innocent.”
The biggest issue for Democrats could be how these charges affect the four competitive races in the House of Representatives.
Democrats need to flip four seats to win back the majority.
The four GOP-held seats in the House of Representatives provided a most inviting target.
Adams made it clear he intends to fight these charges.
That will only serve to keep them in the headlines.
But now the four Democrat challengers will have to run with the baggage of the Adams corruption charges weighing them down.
