The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has created a renewed interest in going after waste, fraud, and abuse in Washington, D.C.
U.S. Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) wants to pull the plug on one of the worst offenders in the Swamp.
Taxpayers are picking up part of the tab to fund left-wing propaganda on the radio and TV.
National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) receive $500 million from taxpayers through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
Kennedy wants to end the taxpayer-funded gravy train with the No Propaganda Act, which would eliminate federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
The colorful Louisiana lawmaker blasted the idea of taxpayers forking over money to put left-wing commentary on the airwaves during a speech on the Senate floor.
“We’re spending half a billion dollars a year, 14 and a half billion dollars over time, to give to people at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and NPR and NPS [sic] to participate in opinion journalism, which they’re entitled to do, but they can’t do it on the taxpayer dime. They’re doing it on the taxpayer dime, but they shouldn’t be able to,” Kennedy explained.
NPR and PBS live high on the hog thanks to taxpayers
Kennedy pointed out that NPR’s new headquarters in Washington, D.C. cost more than $200 million.
NPR hosts make more than $500,000 a year and its chief diversity officer pulls in more than $300,000 per year.
“And you know what?” Kennedy asked. “Despite all of this money that the American taxpayer are giving to these left-of-center entities, their viewership has declined. Because people don’t need them anymore.”
The digital age has created a variety of listening options through things like online radio stations and podcasts.
“They can go exist on their own if they want to, but I do want to defund them. We’re running $36 trillion in debt. This is disgraceful in 2025. It’s disgraceful whether it is left-of-center opinion journalism or right-of-center opinion journalism. It is disgraceful for the American people to have to fund this rot,” Kennedy said.
Kennedy read off some headlines from NPR to emphasize the network’s extreme left-wing bias.
“Here’s another headline from NPR: ‘How racism became a marketing tool for country music.’ I kid you not. The American taxpayers are spending half a billion a year to pay a local station to buy content that says country music is racist,” Kennedy stated.
NPR CEO Katherine Maher called President Donald Trump a racist and downplayed the destruction of the Black Lives Matter riots in 2020.
The network has become the radio equivalent of MSNBC with its steady drumbeat of left-wing propaganda.
Former NPR business editor Uri Berliner accused the network of losing the public’s trust over its extreme left-wing bias under Maher.
Taxpayers shouldn’t have to pick up the tab to fund the Democrat Party’s messaging on the radio.
