Donald Trump promised to take care of the country’s great senior citizens.
He’s about to give them some much-needed breathing room.
And senior citizens got one message from Donald Trump that left them jumping for joy.
Donald Trump supports Thomas Massie’s plan to stop taxing Social Security benefits
One of the most illogical taxes that Americans are forced to pay is on their Social Security benefits.
The government takes income tax out of a social security check before it’s sent to senior citizens.
Senior citizens already paid tax on their Social Security benefits while they were working.
Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) introduced the Senior Citizens Tax Elimination Act to put more in the pockets of senior citizens by ending the unjust double taxation on Social Security benefits.
Social Security benefits weren’t taxed until the 1980s.
Massie has pushed the bill for years in Congress, but the idea is starting to gain serious traction now.
President Donald Trump wants to include the proposal as part of the expansion and renewal of his landmark 2017 tax cuts.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that no taxes on seniors’ Social Security was a top priority for Trump on the tax bill being negotiated in Congress.
She said that Trump was looking to pass the largest middle-class tax cut in history.
“No tax on tips, which is obviously a very public campaign promise the president made,” Leavitt said. “No tax on seniors’ Social Security. No tax on overtime pay. Renewing President Trump’s 2017 middle-class tax cuts. Adjusting the SALT [state and local tax] cap. Eliminate all the special tax breaks for billionaire sports team owners. Close the carried interest tax deduction loophole. Tax cuts for made-in-America products.”
Coach Tommy Tuberville introduces Senate version of Massie’s bill
U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) introduced the Senate version of Massie’s Senior Citizens Tax Elimination Act with U.S. Senator Tim Sheehy (R-MT).
“Seniors work the majority of their adult lives so that they can spend their retirement comfortably,” Tuberville said. “In a day and age where the cost of living has skyrocketed, our seniors should not experience a second tax on their Social Security, when they’ve already paid income tax on their paychecks.”
Massie scolded the federal government for taxing senior citizens on money they already earned.
“Although seniors have already paid tax on their Social Security contributions via the payroll tax, they are still required to list these benefits as taxable income on their tax returns,” Massie said in a statement. “This is simply a way for Congress to obtain more revenue for the federal government at the expense of seniors who have already paid into Social Security. My bill would exempt Social Security retirement benefits from taxation and boost the retirement income of millions of older Americans.”
Many senior citizens are feeling the squeeze from the cost of living crisis that former President Joe Biden created.
Ending the unjust double taxation on them will let them enjoy more of their hard-earned money in their golden years.
