Suspect Arrested After Marcy Kaptur Was Rushed to the Hospital Following Stolen Car Crash

Marcy Kaptur was riding to church service when a car slammed into her vehicle.

Toledo Police say the car that caused it was stolen, and the driver ran.

What a witness says happened next has investigators chasing more than just one suspect.

The Car That Hit Kaptur Was Stolen

The 80 year old congresswoman was a passenger heading to a church service Sunday morning near North Detroit and Central Avenues in Toledo.

Kaptur and her 26 year old campaign manager, Kegan Zimmerman, were riding together when a car heading south crossed into their path and struck them.

Both were rushed to the hospital with non life threatening injuries.

The driver who caused the crash didn't stick around to explain himself.

He ran.

Officers on scene told reporters the sedan that caused the crash didn't belong to the person driving it.

It had been stolen.

That detail changes the entire story.

This wasn't two neighbors colliding at an intersection.

This was a stolen vehicle plowing into a sitting member of Congress and then vanishing into the Toledo streets.

Toledo Police Chief Mike Troendle said late Sunday that detectives were closing in, with multiple leads pointing toward a suspect.

Police announced an arrest on Thursday morning but no identification of the suspect has been made.

Toledo's Crime Stats Don't Match the Streets

Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz stood in front of cameras last month and announced crime was down across the board.

Homicides down 25 percent. Robberies down 17 percent. Theft from vehicles down 21 percent, according to the city's own mid year numbers.

None of those categories track stolen cars barreling through intersections, and that's exactly what put a congresswoman in the hospital.

An 18 year old led Toledo Police on a 100 mile per hour chase in a stolen car back in March before jumping out and hiding in a trash can.

In July an 83 year old had their keys and car stolen right out of a library parking lot, and the thief crashed into another occupied vehicle while fleeing police.

Now a stolen car has put a member of Congress in the hospital.

The people actually living in Toledo are dealing with a city where stolen cars keep ending up as weapons.

The Driver's Escape Had Help

A witness told local reporters the driver did not flee on foot.

According to that account, another car swung by and took him away before officers could reach him.

Breitbart's reporting suggests this wasn't just someone bolting in a panic.

It looks more like the getaway had already been arranged.

Toledo Police have not publicly addressed the second vehicle, but the investigation remains active.

Republican Derek Merrin, who is expected to challenge Kaptur again this cycle, dropped the campaign rhetoric Sunday and simply asked Ohioans to keep her in their prayers.

Ohio Sen. Jon Husted also spoke up, telling Newsmax he wants whoever was behind the wheel found and made to answer for it.

A congresswoman on her way to church got run down by a stolen car, and someone was already there to drive the man away.

Kaptur's office says she is alert and grateful for the outpouring of support from constituents.

Witness Morgan Valley told local reporters she heard the crash from inside her house and thought someone had died.

She said an engine from one of the vehicles ended up lying across the street.

That's how hard the impact was.

Toledo's Spreadsheet Won't Stop the Next Stolen Car

Toledo's mayor spent last month reading off a spreadsheet telling residents crime is going in the right direction, and now a stolen car with a getaway ride lined up has put an 80 year old congresswoman in the hospital on her way to church.

Spreadsheets don't stop stolen cars from plowing into people.

This is the third stolen vehicle incident to make Toledo headlines since March, and each time the pattern is the same: someone takes a car that isn't theirs, drives recklessly through the city, and has an exit ready when it goes wrong.

The driver who hit Kaptur is still out there.

Toledo Police say they're closing in, and Chief Troendle deserves credit for the update, but "closing in" doesn't cut it for a city that keeps promising residents things are getting better.

Kaptur is a Democrat and Merrin is the Republican trying to unseat her, and for one day at least, neither side treated this like a campaign opportunity.

Toledo's mayor can keep pointing at his spreadsheet.

The next stolen car won't care what it says.
