Adam Fetcher Was Obama’s Handpicked Spokesman and Authorities Just Charged Him With a Bizarre Theft

Now the mayor's own hand-picked spokesman just joined the very list of accused criminals he was paid to manage.

Prosecutors say Obama's former press secretary stole from his own coworkers for a reason nobody could have predicted.

Obama's Former Spokesman Joins Minneapolis's Long List of Fraud Defendants

Adam Fetcher built his career inside Barack Obama's inner circle.

He worked as assistant press secretary at Obama's Department of Homeland Security in 2011.

He then ran communications at Obama's Department of the Interior before joining the president's reelection campaign as deputy national press secretary.

Fetcher parlayed that resume into corporate communications jobs at Patagonia and Lyft.

By this year he had landed one of the most powerful press jobs in Minneapolis city government, pulling in nearly two hundred thousand dollars a year as the city's Chief Communications Officer under Mayor Jacob Frey.

That job put him in charge of shaping the city's message while Frey's administration drowned in the largest welfare fraud scandal in state history.

Federal investigators have already tied more than a billion dollars in stolen Medicaid, housing and childcare funds to schemes centered in Minneapolis.

CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz warned Governor Tim Walz that Minnesota had sixty days to clean up its Medicaid program or the federal government would "stop paying" entirely.

Frey used that same window to keep courting his political coalition instead of cleaning house.

Prosecutors say Fetcher had a different agenda entirely.

The Star Tribune reports that investigators believe Fetcher targeted three coworkers, lifting their cash and cards before running up hundreds of dollars in charges at local smoke shops.

Minneapolis fired him in early July once a police probe uncovered the pattern.

On Wednesday prosecutors hit him with a felony count of financial transaction fraud.

Fetcher is not the first Obama alumnus to trade the White House for a courtroom.

Seth Andrew, a former senior education adviser under Obama, was arrested and charged with wire fraud and money laundering after prosecutors say he stole more than two hundred thousand dollars from the very charter schools he founded.

Andrew used the stolen money to help secure a better mortgage rate on a $2.3 million home.

Fetcher's alleged theft is smaller in dollar terms, but it lands in a city that cannot afford one more name on the fraud docket.

Frey's Top Spokesman Was Fresh Out of Rehab When the Thefts Began

Fetcher had no criminal record before this, aside from a few traffic tickets.

The Star Tribune reports that Fetcher had recently finished a stint in rehab when the alleged thefts began.

He had reportedly opened up to colleagues himself about getting treatment.

Investigators say the stolen money went toward kratom, an herbal opioid substitute sold openly in Minneapolis smoke shops.

Kratom is commonly marketed as an opioid withdrawal aid, but federal and state regulators have raised alarms for years about its own addictive potential.

None of that explains why a man pulling a six-figure city salary needed to lift debit cards from his own staff.

Fetcher's attorney declined to comment.

He is due back in court on August 11.

Fox News reached out to Obama's team for comment and got silence in return.

What Fetcher's Arrest Really Exposes About Frey's City Hall

This is not just an embarrassing footnote for one Obama alumnus.

It is a window into what Jacob Frey actually built inside Minneapolis City Hall.

Frey spent his tenure cultivating a coalition, dancing at Somali festivals and declaring the city belonged to a foreign nation, while the fraud scandal metastasized under his nose.

His own top communications chief, the man paid to manage the fallout from that fraud, was allegedly too busy robbing coworkers to buy drugs to actually do the job.

Minneapolis taxpayers are footing the bill twice, once for the billion-dollar fraud schemes Frey refused to confront and again for the salary of the man he trusted to spin it.

Barack Obama built an entire brand on hope and change and staffed the federal government with people like Fetcher for nearly a decade.

Now one of those communications men has been unmasked as just another accused thief inside the most fraud-riddled city in America.

Frey's silence on his own former spokesman speaks louder than any press release Fetcher ever wrote for him.
