Naval Station Rocked After Video Emerges Showing Why One Worker Never Returned From His Lunch Break

Jun 10, 2026

A Navy civilian clocked out for lunch Monday at NSA Panama City – and never came back.

Video of the incident is now circulating online, and his colleague who was right there with him walked away without a scratch.

What that footage captured in Saint Andrews Bay just before noon Monday will stop you cold.

Shark Attack at NSA Panama City Leaves Navy Base Employee in Critical Condition

The call came in at 11:45 a.m. Monday – a shark attack at the MWR Marina on NSA Panama City, the popular waterfront recreation area used daily by service members and base employees.

The victim was a man in his late 20s, four years on the job with the Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division.

He had gone into the water near the marina on his lunch break alongside a colleague.

The shark struck him on both arms.

His colleague was not hurt.

NSA Panama City Fire and Emergency Services transported the victim to HCA Gulf Coast Hospital, where he was rushed into emergency surgery.

NSA Commanding Officer Tristan Oliveria addressed the attack publicly and made clear where his head was.

"First and foremost, our prayers and thoughts go out to the family," Oliveria said, "and we want to send our appreciation to the first responders who rendered initial aid."

HCA Gulf Coast Hospital has since confirmed the man came through surgery and may be transferred to a trauma center for additional treatment.

The Bay County Sheriff's Office, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and NOAA are all investigating.

St. Andrews Bay Shark Attack Puts Florida Panhandle on Alert

Here is what the casual news coverage is missing.

NSA Panama City is not a beach resort.

It is a working military installation that has operated on these waterways since 1945 – home to the Naval Surface Warfare Center, the Navy Experimental Diving Unit, and the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center.

The MWR Marina sits directly on St. Andrews Bay, a stretch of open waterway with unobstructed access to the Gulf of Mexico.

The same waters the Navy's own combat divers train in.

The same waters that put a woman in critical condition just two years ago after a shark took part of her arm at Watersound Beach – less than 40 miles from where Monday's attack happened.

The same waters that saw two teenagers attacked within 90 minutes of each other that same afternoon in June 2024, both airlifted to the hospital.

Bay County Emergency Services posted purple warning flags along the beach immediately after Monday's attack – the signal that dangerous marine life is present.

Those flags went up because the threat is real, and everyone who works or recreates on that base now knows it.

Florida Shark Attacks 2026: Why the Gulf Coast Is the Most Dangerous Water in America

The University of Florida's International Shark Attack File confirmed Florida racked up 14 shark bites in 2024 – more than any other state or country on earth.

That same report noted the Gulf Coast rarely sees attacks compared to Florida's Atlantic side.

Monday's attack happened on the Gulf side.

This is a four-year Naval Surface Warfare Center employee who trusted that his own base's marina was a safe place to take a swim on his lunch break.

He trusted the water.

He trusted the base.

He survived surgery – but his family spent Monday night in a hospital waiting room while Navy officials released nothing about the species of shark involved or whether the marina has been closed.

Florida leads the world in shark attacks every single year – and this summer just announced itself on the grounds of an American military installation.

His colleagues are going back to work today.

He is not.
